Introduction: DIY Glow Stick

This video shows you how to make a glow stick.

However, as some of the ingredient(e.g. CPPO) is not easy to get, i think you can treat this is a science demonstration rather than a home-made project.

Things you need:

(1)20ml DEP (Diethyl phthalate)

(2)2g CPPO (Bis-(2,4,5-trichloro-6-(pentyloxycarbonyl)phenyl)oxalate) (sorry for mistake in the video)

(3)0.1g Sodium Acetate (

4)0.05g Rubrene

(5)10ml 30% Hydrogen Peroxide

Notes:

(1)30% hydrogen peroxide is corrosive, please pay special attention when you deal with it

(2)As CPPO do not dissolve in water, hot DEP works as a organic solvent

(3)As the reaction works better in alkaline, sodium acetate is weak base which works as a catalyst

(4)The solution turn will brighter if more sodium acetate is added, however, it will dim more quickly

Special thanks to NurdRage, before reading his video, I used TBA(tert-Butyl alcohol) & DBP (Dibutyl phthalate) instead of DEP (Diethyl phthalate). As the melting point of TBA is 25 degree,it may be in solid state under room temperature, it takes extra time for me to prepare the experiment before
