Introduction: DIY GoPro Handler Clone for UNDER $2.50!

For this instructable I challenged myself to create a GoPro Handler clone from an item purchased at the Dollar Tree. This is a pretty simple build that looks really nice and has a good feel when using it. And the best part? The final cost was under $2.50, which means you can save up to $27.50 if you skip buying the official handler and make your own instead!

Step 1: Tools & Materials

Materials

  • Window ice scraper $1 (Dollar Tree)
  • 10/32 Wing Nut $1.24/2-pk (Lowe’s)
  • GoPro thumb screw

Tools

  • Flat Head Screwdriver
  • Knife
  • 13/64 Drill bit & Drill
  • Scissors/tin snips, similar tool

NOTE: Use caution when working with sharp tools, and always wear safety gear.

Step 2: Removing the Scraper

I used a flat head screwdriver to pry off the plastic scraper blade from the handle. Then I used tin snips to cut off the remaining plastic leaving the center plastic support exposed.

Step 3: Trimming the Center Plastic Support

With the knife, trim off any excess plastic to make the center plastic support thin enough to easily slide between your GoPro housing mounting prongs.

Optional: Trim top point of the center plastic support to allow the housing to swivel back and forth when mounted.

Step 4: Drilling the Hole

Drill the hole ~1/4 inch from the end using a 13/64 drill bit.

Step 5: Mounting the GoPro

Insert your newly made handler in between the housing prongs, align the holes, and insert the GoPro thumb screw. Use the wing nut to tighten the screw. That's basically it! Congratulations! You've just made a good quality GoPro handler clone for under $2.50!
Need some extra piece of mind that your GoPro will be safe? Then check out the next step. :-)

Step 6: Tethering GoPro to Handler (Optional)

Use a modified GoPro thumb screw from my other Instructable to attach a tether from the screw to the bottom of your DIY handler. Should the middle piece ever break off, the GoPro will not fall off your handler.
