Introduction: DIY Honeycomb Wall Shelf
If you're looking to add some shelves on your wall and you want them to look fancy, then it might turn out to be quite costly. But fear not when you have Popsicle's lying around. With these small sticks, you can simply build your own shelf of your own design.
So in this Instructable, I'll show you how to make a honeycomb shaped shelf out of Popsicle's. This is a very good way of reusing those hundreds of Popsicle which you were gonna throw away. Also, you're the architect here, and with these sticks you can pretty much build anything you want.
Step 1: The Stuff You Need
For this simple project you'll need the following items:
- Popsicles (lot of them)
- Glue
- Paint
- Glitter
- Pen and Paper
Step 2: Making the Template
The first step is to have a template to build over. This makes it easier while assembling the popsicles one over the other.
To make the template, draw a hexagon on a piece of paper with pen or a marker. Each side of the hexagon should be equal to or less than the size of the popsicle. Now you have the template ready.
Let's start building.
Step 3: Building the Base
The basement is the most important part in anything you're building. So first let's make the base for the structure.
Place 3 popsicles on alternate sides of the hexagon template as shown in the figure. Add a drop of glue on the ends of the 3 popsicles.
Now place 3 more popsicles on top of these and complete the hexagon. Now you should have a structure where the popsicles are layered alternately on top of each other.
Step 4: Continue Adding Layers
Now that you have a base to build on, continue adding layers on top of each other. Repeat this process until the shelf is deep enough to meet your requirements.
Also take care that the layers don't flare off as you're building higher. After adding your desired number of layers, set it aside for about 1 hour so that the glue dries off completely.
Step 5: Painting
After the glue is dried completely, give it a coating of paint of your choice. Get creative with colors that match your house perfectly.
While painting, make sure that the paint reaches all the gaps in between layers. You can even sprinkle a little bit of glitter powder over the paint before it dries. This would give it a nice premium look to the shelf.
Step 6: Hanging It
Once the paint on the shelf dries, you can either glue a picture hanger to the shelf or just leave it as it is. You also have the option of drilling a couple of nails into the wall to hang this marvelous creation of yours.
You can simply place it on the edge of a table near a wall too.
The shape of the shelf need not be restricted to geometrical shapes. You can combine a few hexagons and make it into a hexagonal maze shaped shelf, or even the shelf can be made into a bunny if you'd like.
Get creative and keep innovating !!
