Hi everyone!

In this sewing tutorial I’m going to show you how to make a quilted fabric bread basket / tray. This fabric basket is very useful and decorative at the same time. It also makes a great gift for friends and family.

Important note: I use the metric system and make the exact conversion from cm to inches in the hope of helping. Please adapt these measurements to your ruler.

Supplies

NOTE: Dimensions in inches are approximated.

The materials and techniques I used are the ones I thought were the best for me as a self-taught creative seamstress. It doesn’t mean they are the best for you, so feel free to use your creativity and make it your own! You can adjust the measurements as you like and also add other features.

Fabric measurements for the outside fabric:

- 1 fabric piece: 50cm | 19 11/16” x 45cm | 17 23/32”

Fabric measurements for the inside fabric:

- 1 fabric piece: 50cm | 19 11/16” x 45cm | 17 23/32”

Sew in fabric stabilizer measurements:

- 1 fabric piece: 50cm | 19 11/16” x 45cm | 17 23/32”

Fabric measurements for the straps (you can replace the straps by ribbons or snap buttons):

- 8 fabric pieces: 25cm | 9 27/32” x 3cm | 1 3/16”

Needle sizes (universal sewing machine needles):

- 80/12

- 90/14

- 110/18

Seam Allowance:

- 0.3cm | 1/8” (Straps)

- 1cm | 25/64” (Sewing both fabric pieces together before turning right side out)

- 10cm | 3 15/16" (Last step: basket finishing)

You will also need:

- Turning Tool

- Scissors

- Wonder Clips

- Quilting Ruler

- Rotary Cutter

- Cutting Mat

- Corner and Edge Shaper

- Sewing Thread

- Seam Ripper

- Heat Erasable Pen

- Measuring Tape

- Iron

- Ironing Board

- Sewing Machine

Step 1: Make the Fabric Tubes

- Cut eight pieces of fabric for the fabric tubes.

- Fold the longest side of each piece of fabric in half.

- Adjust the stitch length according to your preferences. Use an 80/12 sized needle.

- Sew the fabric tubes, using a 0.3cm | 1/8" seam allowance.

- Leave one of the smaller sides of each fabric tube opened, as shown in the images.

- Trim off the excess fabric and thread from each fabric tube.

- Turn the fabric tubes right side out using your preferred turning tool.

- Press the fabric tubes to make it flat and neat, as shown in the images.

Step 2: Quilt the Inside Piece of Your Fabric Bread Basket

- Mark your quilt lines diagonally, with a heat erasable pen, by starting at one corner of your fabric.

- Use a 45 degree angle, as shown in the images.

- Leave a 5cm | 2" space between the quilting lines.

- Then, follow the same procedure as before, starting from the other corner.

- Place the fabric piece on top of the batting.

- Adjust the stitch length according to your preferences.

- Use a 90/14 sized needle.

- Sew the quilt lines.

- Square up your quilt: trim off the excess thread, fabric and batting so that your quilt corners are square (90 degree angles) and the edges are straight.

- Press the quilted fabric piece to remove the lines of the marking pen.

Step 3: Sew the Fabric Tubes to the Quilted Fabric Piece

- Mark lines that run parallel to the four edges of your quilt.

- Align the ruler with the edge of your quilt and leave an 11cm | 4 21/64" space between the edge of your quilt and the line you are drawing. Proceed the same way for the other edges.

- The lines that you just drew will serve as a reference to place your fabric tubes.

- Now place your fabric tubes as shown in the images. Make sure they are in the right position.

- Sew the straps to the quilted fabric piece as close to the edge as possible.

- Press your quilted fabric to remove the lines of the heat erasable pen.
