Easy DIY Jewelry Organizer Made From Scrap Wood

In this Instructable, I will be showing you how to make your own jewelry organizer. This organizer is perfect for display and is easily accessible. It's also customizable to your own accessories.

Hold tight, follow the steps, and you'll have your own organizer in no time!

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

Here's the list of materials:

• scrap wood (I got mine from around the house and in the scrap wood bin at Home Depot)
• wood glue (I used Titebond's original wood glue)
• push pins (# is variable depending on what accessories you want to hang, but I used 21)
• hammer
• hand saw
• measuring tape (I used the Stanley Powerlock)
• small ruler
• pencil
• string/yarn
• textbooks/heavy books or weights
• accessories you plan to put in the organizer

Step 2: Cut Your Wood

These are the dimensions. You should have:

Piece A: one piece of wood that is 9 1/8" x 1/4" x 12 9/16" (23 cm x 0.7 cm x 32 cm)

Piece B & C: two pieces of wood that are 8 1/2" x 1/4" x 1 1/2" (21.5 cm x 0.7 cm x 3.8 cm)

Piece D & E: two pieces of wood that are 1 1/2 " x 1/4" x 12 9/16" (4 cm x 0.7 cm x 32 cm)

and Piece F & G: two pieces of wood that are 2 15/16" x 1/4" x 1 1/2" (7.4 cm x 0.7 cm x 3.8 cm)

The pieces are labeled on the 6th picture.

I drew the shapes on my scrap wood using the measuring tape and cut the pieces with the hand saw.

You don't have to have these exact dimensions. You can make it smaller or bigger depending on what you want to hold. Just make sure that your pieces are fitted together. When fitted, it should look like the 8th picture.

Step 3: Glue Your Pieces Together

Use the wood glue to glue your pieces together.

Piece A is the backboard. Pieces B & C will align on top and bottom, and Pieces D & E will align along the sides. Pieces F & G will be glued on the bottom as feet.

Textbooks or other heavy books can be used to weigh down the wood pieces to help them stick together (as shown in 6th picture).

Don't use too much glue or else it'll spill out on the sides! Wood glue doesn't look that pretty when dried (it's yellow). If you made a mistake and some spilled out (such as in the third picture), just wipe it away quickly with your finger. You can take the glue off your finger very easily after it dries.

Step 4: Lay Out Your Accessories

Lay out your accessories the way you want them to hang on your organizer.

I got a lot of rings on Black Friday, so I planned to hang most of them, as can be seen in the picture.

Step 5: Mark Out Approximately Where Your Accessories Will Hang

Use your pencil and mark out whether you laid out your accessories. Then remove your accessories, and using a small ruler, straighten your dots. It may help to draw a faint, straight line to help align where you put your push pins.

Step 6: Hammer Your Push Pins In

Take your push pins and hammer them in. You can just push them in, but I found that hard to do because the back board was stiff, so I used a hammer to assist me.

When hammering, make sure that the pin is going in straight! Also, be careful that you don't hammer too hard or else the pin part may chip off.

Make sure that the pin is not wobbly after hammering it in. The length of the needle parts of my push pins were about 0.5 cm, and I hammered it in about half way (so about 0.25 cm of the needle showed).

Step 7: Hammer Two Push Pins on the Top

Hammer two push pins on the top. Hammer these a lot more than the ones you put on the board because you want them to be very secure. These pins will hold your string/yarn so that you can hang your organizer up on the wall.

Step 8: Tie Your String to Your Pins

Tie the string/yarn to the pins so that it is secure. Then you now have a handle to hang your organizer on the wall from a nail if you want!

Step 9: You're Done!

Congratulations on building your very own jewelry organizer!

Now you can hang your accessories on the pins. I found that since they are pushpins, you can hang your accessories in two places, as can be seen in the second picture. Hanging it behind the plastic part will make sure that your accessory doesn't fall off.

You can also choose to either hang your organizer up on the wall or to keep it on its feet standing.
