We love plants and greenery and we have a habit of decorating every nook and corner of our home with various plants and creepers. We have had a keen interest in gardening, so much so that we are beginning to run out of space on our patio floor to add new plants and pots. This has inspired us to make full use of our space by hanging the pots and making maximum use of our space. This would not only help us add more plants to our collection but it is also an aesthetically pleasing way to decorate an area of ones home.

Supplies

Jute rope - 20 meters (any kind of rope will do, we decided to use jute rope because it is strong and weather resistant)
Colorful strings
Scissors
A pot

The total cost of this project is less that 5$.

Step 1: Cutting the Rope

Begin by cutting the jute rope into pieces that are 2 meters in length. Depending on the size of your pot you may want to support the pot by either 3 points or 4 points. For larger pots we recommend using 4 points of support which requires 8 pieces of rope each 2 meters long.

In case you decide to use a smaller pot, 3 points of support should be enough, in which case you will require 6 pieces of rope that are 2 meters in length.

We decided to wrap some colorful thread at each end of the rope to not only prevent the rope from fraying but also as to add some color to the design.

Step 2: Creating the Harness

Next, tie the 8 pieces of rope together with some more colorful string. Make sure to wrap the string several times around the 8 pieces of rope to prevent the pot from slipping through. This will make the bottom joint of the harness which will support the pot.

Split the 8 ropes into 4 groups of 2 and create a "+" formation. At this point we recommend you to flip the pot and place the + on top of the pot, making sure to align the center of the + with the center of the pot.

Next, tie the ropes with some more colorful thread 2 by 2 about 5-10 cms from the bottom joint.

Step 3: Making the Criss-cross Pattern

Once the bottom portion of the harness is complete, we can begin to make the crisscross pattern around the pot. Take one rope from one of the 4 groups of 2 and take another rope from the next group and tie the two together with some thread about 10 cms from the previous joint.

Once again, make sure to secure the joints properly to prevent any kind of wear and tear. Repeat this process with the rest of the ropes.

Once one layer of joints are complete, you will notice the formation of "X" shapes. Repeat this process till you have 3-4 layers of "X" shapes depending on the height of the pot.

Step 4: Completing the Harness

Once the crisscross pattern has been created with the jute ropes, you should have approximately 1 meter of rope left. Create a firm knot with the ends of the ropes so that you can hang the planter. At this point, make sure to leave enough space for the plants that you wish to use.

Step 5: Adding the Plants

Depending on the type of pot you have used, we recommend adding small rocks at the base of the pot before adding a soil. Next add your favorite plants, herbs and creepers. The design of the planter makes it so that you can use it with all kinds of plants, succulents, cacti, and creepers. Once the plants are added you can decide a spot to hang it. Once you have finalized the position, you can attach a hook right above the planter and hang the DIY Jute Rope Planter from it. Make sure to hang it at a convenient height so that watering the plants is not a hassle.

Step 6: Final Results

Now that you know how to build one hanging planter you can replicate the process for as many as you need. We made 5 hanging planters and used them in our patio which has given our garden a brand new look. We thoroughly enjoyed the process of making the hanging planters out of jute rope and we eventually plan on making more for our home garden.
