Introduction: DIY Lace Bow Headband

About: Army Vet. I love learning & being creative. I am back!
I decided to make this adorable lace headband because I had one which was similar and I love it and kept getting compliments on it! The other one is worn out and old - so I thought of making a newer nicer one - in white lace material that I had left over from an old project. This headband is so cute and easy to make!

Items Needed:
  • Sewing machine (or you can hand sew this if you have the patience)
  • Lace Material (1/4 to 1/2 a yard to be safe)
  • Thin elastic pieces or a thin elastic headband
  • Needle & Thread (you will need to do a very small amount of hand-sewing)
  • Pins

Step 1: Cut Out Pieces of Material for Lace Bow Headband

Now you'll need to lay out your material and cut out the pieces. Please see image for more details and precise measurements.

Also, please note that your head may not be the same size as mine. To be safe, you may want to cut the elastic piece an inch or two longer than my recommended length, so you can then fit it, and cut it to the right size according to your head size!

Pieces Needed and Measurements:
  • Main headband piece: 18 inches long, 5 inches high
  • Bow: 6 inches long by 6 inches high
  • Band: 4 inches long by 2 inches high
  • Elastic Pieces: 1/4 of an inch thick and 4 1/2 inches long (please leave an inch or two longer so you can adjust to your head size)
Once you cut out the pieces, then please fold the main headband piece the long way and pin it down. Also, fold down the band piece the long way and pin it along the long opening. Lastly, you will need to fold the bow piece down as well and pin the piece along the open edges on the two sides.

Step 2: Sew the Seams

Now, take the main headband piece and sew it where you pinned (the seam allowance should be 1/4 inch if possible - if you have issues sewing the lace at 1/4 inch seam allowance, you can increase it to whatever you are comfortable with), along the long side of the piece of material which you folded down. Once sewn, you will need to take it and put it right side out. Then, take the small band piece and do the same thing - sew the seam and then put it right side out.

Lastly, take your bow piece which is folded in half and you should have pins along the right and left edges. Sew along those edges, then flip it right side out. You will need to do the final seam on the outside of the piece - which is fine and not noticeable once completed. Please see images for more details.

Step 3: Sewing Elastic to the Main Headband Piece

Now it's time to sew on the elastic bands. If you struggle with the two bands and prefer to use one instead, that is fine! Either way, take out your main headband piece and make sure you lay it out flat so that the seam is on the inside bottom - then turn it over. Try to tuck the open edge of the main headband piece under so there aren't any frayed edges showing, then carefully push the elastic band in about a half an inch. Then fold the main headband piece in from both sides (please see images as this is really difficult to describe) - hold it tight and get it under that sewing machine - and sew it in place! Once you have the first side done - please try this on to know if you need to shorter then elastic or leave it as it is - before you sew it onto the other edge to complete the headband.

Step 4: Sewing the Bow Onto the Lace Headband

Now for the tricky part! Get your bow and your band and prepare to do a small amount of hand-sewing. So, take out a needle and thread it and have it ready!

If you want the headband to look like mine in the photos, please measure 4 1/2 inches up from the left side of the main headband piece (not from the elastic but from where the lace headband starts). This will be where you place your bow. You'll need to refer to the images for full details once again - but basically, take the bow and squeeze it in your hand to shape it the way you want it. Hold it to the main headband piece with the top seam towards where the back of the headband will be. Then you'll need to take the band piece and wrap it around both the bow and the main headband piece until you are happy with how it looks. Fold the last 1/4 of an inch or so underneath (and this should be underneath the bow) so you can hand sew it in place. See pictures please!

The very final step is this - you'll want to hand sew in two more places. The ends of the bows should be sewn down to the main headband piece - it will just take a few stitches to secure it so it doesn't stick up in the air, rather lies nicely on your head!
