Being a parent is probably the most difficult job in the world; at least that is what I think right now.

I’m a new mum of a marvellous baby boy and I’m truly glad, but I’m also aware that supporting a family and a newborn can be really expensive. We had to stop thinking for just the two of us - my husband and I - and start thinking about this new creature. We’d furnish his bedroom at our very best, but we were aware that we had to balance this desire with all the expenses we are having in these days.

We needed a piece of furniture where we can storage his things: clothes, shoes, toys, baby-bags and other stuff, but we didn’t want manifestly something for a kid, because in a couple of years it would become useless. That’s why I started considering a modular piece of furniture, we can build in a certain way today and re-assemble it differently tomorrow.

Step 1: Why PlayWood?

Starting from this wish, I decided to come up with a DIY project that allows us to create a sort of composed rectangular structure that can be settle both horizontal and vertical and can be re-designed on the basis of our need in the future.

In order to build this furniture, I decided to buy some fir layers boards of a thickness between 16 and 19 mm (¾” and ⅞”) and to join each wooden board to the others through an angle connector 90°. I personally recommend those produced by PlayWood: they are made of high-quality recycled plastic materials, and thanks to their screw-system you don’t need to drill or nail the material in order to build your DIY project. Thanks to this angular assembly system I saved a lot of money, because I am able to reuse all the materials in many different ways on the basis of my incoming needs.

Step 2: What Do I Need?

In order to build this Montessori furniture, I decided to use:

Step 3: How Do I Build It?

I started the realization of this DIY project by assembling the basement of the furniture: I joint 3 wooden panels using angle plastic connectors 90°. The result is that I have a sort of tripartite basement.

After that I added 4 smaller wooden panels in a vertical sense joining them to the basement through connectors: By doing so I had a tripartite basement and 4 side panels.

In the end I added 3 more bigger wooden boards and created the top of this structure.

Step 4: What Are You Waiting For?

In less than 10 minutes I built a wooden storage for my kid. The project was cheap and easy to assemble and we can easily reconfigure it in a couple of years, as our need we’ll change. What’s better than that?
