Introduction: DIY: Pom-Pom Garland

About: Hello, my name is Tristen Garner. A crazy cat lady who loves bead weaving, baking, and crocheting.

Hello fellow DIYers's! Today I am going to show you how to make Pom-Pom Garland! It is a fairly simple project, and it takes around 5 minutes to make one pom-pom. I made this for my sister's birthday, and she loves it! So I thought that I should show you guys how to make it also!

Step 1: Gather Your Materials

To make your Pom-Pom garland your gonna need...

  • 1 sheet of cardboard(I got mine from a shoe box)
  • skeins of yarn (As many as you like)
  • Scissors
  • A marker of some sort
  • A good attitude

Step 2: Make Your Pom-Pom Makers

You are gonna want to start by tracing something around six inches in diameter, and a circle. On to your cardboard. Then you can draw a small circle in the middle. Start cutting out the outer circle, and then the inner circle. Kind of like a doughnut. Now trace the circle that you have just cutted out onto to the cardboard, and then draw the inner circle, and cut that out. Ones you have both of them cut out put them together and cut from the outside to the inside, and stop there.

Step 3: Making Your Pom-Poms

Now with your cardboard together, and the slits are on the same side. Hold a small tail of yarn in between your fingers, and start wrapping your yarn around the cardboard, when you have wrapped it about 5 times you can let go of your tail, and it should not move while you are wrapping. Start wrapping, and moving towards the other end of the cardboard, or as shown in the pictures above.

Overall you have to wrap your yarn around 200 times, the more you wrap the fluffier it will be. When you get to the end take your scissors, and squeeze it in between the two pom-pom makers, and start cutting.DO NOT cut the yarn that you were just wrapping, or have reaching the end with. Start cutting the yarn, as shown in picture #4.You can also see that I am taking the yarn the i said do not cut, and also squeezing it in between the cardboard after I have cut it. Keep on doing that until you get the end. Now you split the two pieces of cardboard apart, and your should see one piece of yarn sticking out just like in picture #5, you can now grab that piece of yarn, and tie a not as tight as you can. Take the pom-pom out of the two pieces of cardboard, and tie a second knot, but make sure the first knot is as tight as you can get it. Then kind of mess with it to make it look like a actual pom-pom, and cut the uneven little bits of string with your scissors. Then cut the strand of yarn that is still attached to your skein of yarn.

Step 4: Connecting It to Your Yarn

First you should set your pom-pom upside down, and find the two pieces of string that should be longer than all of the others. Cut a long piece of yarn, as long as you want your garland to be, and tie it to your pom-pom. Cut the two longer pieces of yarn close, but not too close to the garland. You can make another pom-pom, and tie it about 7 inches apart. Keep on making pom-poms, and tying them to your yarn, until you reach the end of it. You are now done with your pom-pom garland! You can hang it up where ever you want, and it will give the room a nice touch of color.
