Intro: DIY Shot Glasses Made of Ice

Making a shot glass out of ice is a cinch. I actually used two flavors of a Kool-aid-like beverage to make these glasses; blue raspberry and blueberry pomegranate. Not only do they make the ice shot glasses a lovely shade of blue, they taste good too. However, they do leave a bit of residual stickiness on your hands. If you don’t want your hands to get sticky, but you still want color, simply add a bit of food coloring to the water.

Ice Shot Glasses Tutorial

You will need:

water or Kool-aid like beverage (if you go with the Kool-aid, water it down so it doesn’t end up too sticky)
    3 oz Dixie cups
1 oz plastic cups or Dixie cups
    small rocks
    duct tape

STEP 1:

Pour beverage into larger cup about 2/3 full.

STEP 2:

Place smaller cup inside the cup and push it down until it is about level with the rim of the larger cup. Add a stone to help to weigh it down.

STEP 3:

Place a piece of duct tape over the two cups.

STEP 4:

Repeat until you have desired number of shot glasses. Place inside freezer for 6-8 hours. (I set the filled cups inside a loaf pan before placing inside the freezer just in case they overflowed.)

STEP 5:

Remove from freezer. Fill the small cup with hot tap water, being careful not to let it overflow onto the ice. Let sit for about 30 seconds. Remover inner cup. Run outside of larger cup under warm water until the cup loosens from the ice. Turn over and push gently on the bottom of the cup until the ice pops out. Bring shot glasses outdoors for your winter party and fill with beverage of your choice.

Somebody did this a few years ago: http://www.elephantstaircase.com/wiki/index.php?title=IceShotGlasses
If you don't want the glasses to be sticky, don't add sugar to the Kool-Aid mixture. It'll still flavour the drink (if that's what you're going for) but won't impart sweetness (or stickiness).
ummmm... if you pour piping hot water into ice cold inner cup, wont the glass shatter?
ok i just read they are plastic. still, that should crack...
How do you stop the ice from shattering when you pour in the booze, Most ice will crack upon having liquids of any temperature pour in/over them. I do love the concept though I think it is a hoot.
Just chill the booze down. Vodka should come out of the freezer anyway, but the whole point of using ice is a cold drink. Just out of the fridge should be ok for most things.
cool Idea were did you get the smaller cups looks like what churches use for the lords supper.
You're just brilliant. Summer's on the way, so we'll make good use of this little trick.

I just love when an 'ible makes me slap my brow and go "Why did I NOT think of this?!"

Thank you for sharing, those are lovely :)
Same here: "I wish I thought of that" makes it an instant classic.
A few suggested hacks:
Boiling the water before freezing makes ice clear instead of milky white like most ice cubes. (I learned this from another 'ible.)
I think I'll use a little real fruit juice for color/flavor; makes it all "natural" -n- classy -n- stuff.
I envision serving them with lighting under them. Maybe supported by a slab of clear ice. That would be a very enticing effect on a hot summer night.

The grip lip is also a good idea. Maybe fluted like a traditional vodka glass.
I don't understand what it's blue water.
Where to buy it . Please help me! thanks
I think this is a great idea, I really love the colored ice, it makes it look even colder.
BUT WAIT!! I have a BETTER IDEA!!!!

instead of a Ice mold, a JELLO MOLD! so now you can make your shot glass out of jello shooter substrate, with an addition shot contained within its jiggly confines!
Great idea, but rubbish for my latte.LOL.
Quite right. My two cups are in the freezer right now. I have had to use much bigger cups but hoping to fill with some sort of alcohol. Regards.
Evilution, there's a good chance you'll be wearing mits or gloves if you are sipping these outside - which cancels out the slippery factor.
Seen this type of thing a few times before but they are all the same, slippery, hard to pick up and hard to hold. Someone needs to think of something a bit more hand friendly with either a handle or a ridge above and below the fingers.
If your guests are having issues with picking these up, I'd suggest they wrap a small paper towel around the glass. Besides, it's a shot glass and the drink is supposed to be downed quickly. Its not meant to be sipped and the glass shouldn't be in their hands for more than a few seconds. If they can't hang onto a shot glass of ice for a few seconds, perhaps it's time to cut them off from the adult beverages?
