Step 1: Gather Materials

Step 2: Draw Planets

Use a pencil to draw circles to mark the planets so you can make sure the spacing is to your liking before stitching.

Step 3: Start With the Sun

Select two yellow thread colors for the sun. Starting with the first thread, slip the needle through the center of the drawn circle from the inside of the pocket to the outside. Note that you'll always want to begin in the inside of the pocket.

Then slip the needle back through at the top of the drawn circle. Next, pull the needle back through the center, then slip it through the upper right point of the circle. Repeat this to make a star-like formation.

Step 4: Fill in the Sun

Once all the lines are complete, slip the thread through the center point, then start threading over one line and under one line in a circular formation until only a tiny bit of each line is still showing. This technique is commonly used for flowers, but I thought it would be perfect for the sun.

Step 5: Finish the Sun

Now take the other yellow thread to create tiny triangles at each tip of the sun's "rays."

Step 6: Add Earth

Choose a nice green and blue for planet earth. Starting with the green, outline continent shapes. Then fill each continent in by stitching from side to side, top to bottom.

Step 7: Stitch Remaining Planets

Stitch the remaining planets by outlining each circle, then filling them in with side-to-side stitches, top to bottom. Have fun with your color selection!

Step 8: Add Orbit Lines

Now it's time to complete the solar system with orbit lines. Take the white thread and separate three strands so these lines will be thinner than the others. Starting on the inside of the pocket, stitch short, dash-like lines in oval shapes (I added three). These orbit lines really bring everything together nicely!

Step 9: Outline the Pocket (Optional)

To really make things pop, you can use a fabric marker or even thread to outline the pocket. This draws the eye to the pocket even more.

Step 10: All Done!

This project may be time consuming, but the final look is simply stellar. Thanks for checking out this tutorial! 💫
