Introduction: DIY Table Top Fan and Lamp

About: Hi there! I'm a hobbyist and 3D printing enthusiast who loves to tinker with electronics, especially Arduino and NodeMCU projects. I love sharing my knowledge and experience with others, and that's why I'm exc…

In today's world, where multi-purpose items are a hot commodity, why not combine two useful devices into one? That's where a DIY tabletop fan cum lamp comes in handy! Not only does it save space, but it also adds a touch of uniqueness to your home decor. In this instructable, we will go over the steps to create your own tabletop fan cum lamp using simple tools and materials. Whether you're a seasoned DIY enthusiast or just looking for a fun weekend project, this guide will help you create a functional and stylish piece for your home. So let's get started and learn how to make a cool and practical tabletop fan cum lamp!

Supplies

In this project, I have used a fused LED bulb, an old cooling fan, and 3D-printed parts. The complete list of supplies are given below:

  1. Fused LED Bulb
  2. Old Cooling fan (12V, 0.9 Amp)
  3. 3D Printed Case
  4. 3D printed Cover
  5. 3D printed Fan Mounting Part
  6. On-Off Switches (2)
  7. Wire
  8. 5mm white LEDs (6)
  9. 3D printed LED holder
  10. M3 Nut Bolt
  11. DC Jack
  12. 12 V DC Supply
  13. 1K resistors (2)

The following tools have been used in this instructable to prepare the DIY tabletop fan cum lamp:

  1. Soldering Iron, flux, soldering wire
  2. Tweezer
  3. Component holder for soldering
  4. Wire cutter and stripper

Step 1: Repair the Fused LED Bulb

I am going to use an old fused LED as the lamp. Hence, the first step is repairing the LED. The LEDs from the fused LED have been replaced with five white LEDs (5 mm). Here I have used only 5 white LEDs, but you can use more LEDs or different colors. All the LEDs are powered directly by a 12 DC supply.

  1. Open The old Fused LED.
  2. Remove the circuit plate and LEDs.
  3. Make the hole in the plastic body of the fused LED.
  4. Insert the wire in the hole for the power supply.
  5. Solder all the 5 White LEDs in parallel through a 1K resistor.
  6. Solder the power supply wire with these LEDs
  7. Close the LEDs with light-diverging dome-like parts.
  8. Insert the repaired LED in the 3D-printed LED holder (Designing and 3D printing of this holder is discussed in step-2).

Now, the old fused LED bulb has been repaired. It is ready to be used in our project.

Step 2: Design and 3D Printing the Parts

Many of the parts needed in this instructable have been designed on some CAD modeling software and 3D printed. The following parts have been 3D printed for use in our project:

  1. Case for Circuit
  2. Cover for the case.
  3. Cooling fan mounting part
  4. Support for cooling fan mounting part.
  5. LED holder

In the 3D-printed casing for the circuit, heat inserts are used to tighten the cover plate on it using a screw. All the required parts are now ready to be assembled to make an amazing fan cum lamp.

Note: If you do not have access to a 3D printer, you can use some boxes and other waste materials which are eligible to replace these 3D printed parts.

Step 3: Installing Cooling Fan

Now, I am going to Install the 12V, 0.9 amp cooling fan on the 3D printed fan mounting part. 3D printed Fan mounting part has been provided with holes on one of its arms, for wire management. The cooling fan was placed in its place and tightened with bolts and nuts. The wire for the power supply is passed through those holes.

Step 4: Preparing the Circuit Box

In this step, I am going to prepare the circuit box for controlling the fan and lamp. The circuit diagram for connection has been shown in the images:

  1. There are two ports for on-off switches in the circuit casing box. One switch is for the fan and another is for the lamp. Insert the switches in these ports.
  2. install the DC jack for connecting the 12V DC power supply (Here an Adaptor has been used to directly converting Ac supply into a 12V DC supply).
  3. Make the connection between the DC jack and On-off switches.
  4. Connect a LED to indicate the on-off of the fan and lamp. The LED has been connected through a 1K resistor to a 12V DC power supply.
  5. Connect the wire of the fan and LED lamp through switches to the 12V power supply.

Step 5: Assembling All Parts

Now all the connections have been done. It's time to assemble all the parts into a beautiful tabletop fan cum lamp:

  1. Put the cover on the circuit casing box.
  2. Assemble the Fan mounting part with the circuit casing box using holes and projections.
  3. Assemble the stopper with the fan mounting part using holes and projections.
  4. Assemble the LED lamp with holder ( prepared in step-1) using bolt and nut.

Step 6: Conclusion

After assembling all parts, you will get the amazing tabletop fan cum lamp as shown in the pictures attached below.

In conclusion, creating a DIY tabletop fan cum lamp is a fun and practical project that anyone can undertake. By following the steps outlined in this guide, you can turn a small table fan and lamp kit into a functional and stylish piece for your home. Not only will this project save you space, but it will also add a unique touch to your home decor. Additionally, by creating something with your own hands, you'll have a sense of pride and satisfaction that comes with DIY projects. So, what are you waiting for?
