Here you will learn how to make a DIY Wood Work Table

This can take 2 to 3 hours to build, supplies not including tools are about $50

My idea for this project was to make a basic, no frills, minimalist work table out of wood.

Could it be stronger? Could it be painted? Yes, but that isn't necessary.

I can put a significant amount of weight on the table, I've built several. You can also paint it and upgrade it further to support more weight or add wheels.

Supplies

Tools

  • Wood saw and blade
  • Tape measure
  • Pen
  • Screw Driver and bits
  • Wood clamps x2
  • Table

Materials

  • 2x4x96in pine wood x5 ($27.5)
  • 1x12x96 paint grade panel x1 ($20)
  • #10 or #12 2in long wood screws ($5)
  • #10 or #12 3in long wood screws ($5)

Step 1: Buy Wood and Screws

Buy:

  • 2x4x96in pine wood x5 ($27.5)
  • 1x12x96 paint grade panel x1 ($20)
  • #10 or #12 2in long wood screws ($5)
  • #10 or #12 3in long wood screws ($5)

Step 2: Cut Wood

Cut Eight 2x4's to 3 Foot Long

Cut Two 2x4's to 2 Foot Long

Cut Panel into 2 halves



Step 3: Assemble Panels to 2 Foot 2x4's

with the edge of the 2 panel halves sticking out over the side of a table

take one of the shorter two foot 2x4's and clamp it underneath the short end of the panels

take 2 inch screws and screw them from the top down into the 2x4's, check that the edges are flush.

Step 4: Assemble 3 Foot 2x4's to Corners of Short Side of Panel

You can lay the table upside down, find the short side of the table and place the 3 foot 2x4's flush with the top edge and side.

screw the 3 foot long 2x4 into the 2 foot long 2x4's perpendicularly.

Be careful not to strip the heads out of the screws. Use a good fitting bit, slowly spin the drill and put lots of pressure on the drill with your shoulder if possible.

Step 5: Assemble 3 Foot 2x4'S to Corners of Long Side of Panel

Use 3 inch screws

After all 4 legs are attached to short ends of the panel

do the same but on the long side, and overlap the corners so that these are sitting on the new corners your just made around the panel

Do at least 2 screws into the 2x4 joint and then use clamps to hold the legs together at the floor end and put another 1 screw at the end.

Step 6: Flip Table Onto It's Legs and Test

Flip the table onto its new legs

Brush off the top

wiggle and bump the table forward and back to see how well the joints hold

put some weight onto the sides and then the center

there should be some wiggle left and right on the long axis but it should be strong and sturdy on the short axis.

If there's a loose joint then add another screw and retest.

If you want to make it more rigid or stronger you can add 2x4's on the long end underneath but I found I didn't even need them.
