Introduction: Daniel’s Arcana

During a Fixperts course, we collaborated with the 'Tsad Kadima' day center for adults with cerebral palsy, where we met Daniel, a charming 26-year-old man who maneuvers an electric wheelchair using his feet. As part of his stay at the center, he participates in music lessons where he plays an electronic musical instrument called the Arcana, an innovative instrument designed for people living with disabilities. The Arcana can be played using chords or by strumming. Daniel plays the Arcana with his feet, but the assembly process takes about 14 minutes, the buttons are not adapted for him and he cannot see them, and additionally, Daniel does not have the ability to strum.

In our project, we created for Daniel an assistive device that allows him to play the Arcana using his feet. We designed for him a specialized surface that quickly interfaces with his wheelchair, equipped with buttons adapted for playing with the feet. Furthermore, we created for Daniel a unique strumming pedal, and so for the first time, Daniel is able to play and strum in a way that suits him. Just like everyone else!
