Intro: Daves Awesome Hot Chocolate

My hot chocolate is awesome. I know this because everyone that has ever tasted it has said so.

This recipe took me about a week of tasty trial and error to create. I set out to create an ultimate hot chocolate recipe.

I succeeded.

It's awesome in kind of a romantic way. It wants to take you out on a date and be a gentleman. It wants to buy you roses and lay you down by the fire. It's hot hot chocolate is what I'm trying to say. It is both literally and figuratively hot chocolate.

Here is what you will need. Be warned! This is the ultimate hot chocolate. Therefore altering it will, by definition, be a lesser form of hot chocolate. If you make this hot hot chocolate recipe and you alter it I cannot be held responsible for the disappointment you will feel.
  1. A double boiler
  2. Hand blender
  3. 1/8 teaspoon ground ginger
  4. 1/8 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  5. 1/8 + 1/16 teaspoon ground cloves
  6. 1/2 cup dark chocolate chips
  7. 1/4 cup white chocolate chips
  8. 5 cups of organic whole milk

STEP 1: Warm Up the Milk

You want the milk to be nice and ready to accept Hot Chocolating. Cold milk cannot be hot chocolate, so get it nice and warm. Just a little steamy.

Cooking milk will cause it to form a film on top. You don't want that film so as soon as it starts to form, take it off.

While that's warming up, move on to the next step.

STEP 2: Double Boil You Some Hotness

Put the chocolate chips and spices into the double boiler. Start double boilin'.

You just want to melt the chocolate. While it's melting, stir it a little bit.

STEP 3: Scrape the Hot Chocolate Into the Warm Milk

This is the best part.

Combine the melted chocolate with the warmed milk and use the hand blender to mix it together thoroughly.

Serve with two marshmallows per cup of hot chocolate.

Take a "Three Musketeers" bar and put it in a cup of boiling hot water (break it into small pieces first) stir until all is melted. NOW THAT's Awesome hot chocolate.

I love this .....soooooo good
If there were no difference between milks, nobody would be vegan or purchase certain brands or certain types. But since milk choices are up to the consumer, you don't have to use organic. I'm sure most people would just prefer the taste. But I know someone who works for a dairy, whose milk tastes much better than a common "organic" brand, and it's predominantly organic but just can't claim it. While the "organic" brand has gotten in trouble for a few things and alleged to not always be organic. But I myself would only purchase Organic Valley brand, unless I really knew the company. I mainly use vegan milk myself though.
Hot chocolote with ginger and cinnamon.. Mmm, sounds good.
Thanks for sharing.
I would beg to differ on the altering comment. Whipped cream would make this ~the~ ultimate hot chocolate. I wish I had a double boiler in my apartment. Might have to pick one up just for this.
A double boiler is simply a bowl or pan sitting inside a saucepan or pot. No need for anything fancy.
I beg to differ on your whipped cream, marshmallow fluff however, would make it the ultimate hot chocolate. It would have to be super hot hot chocolate though, get that marshmallow nice and melted..
Nah. Whipped cream > marshmallows. That's just my opinion though. I only like marshmallows when they're toasted. Hmm, but that is a good idea to use fluff (I somehow like that more than marshmallows).
HOW ABOUT BOTH!!! HAHAHA, whipped cream AND marshmellows, double the awesomeness!!
Fluff is great in hot cocoa because it melts better than marshmallows IMHO. You get this nice gooey layer ontop of your cocoa, so when you drink it, you usually get a bit of marshmallow and then some hot cocoa. It adds a delicious thickness and layer to your cocoa :D I'm a fan of having two or more distinct flavors in food and varying the overall flavor by eating/drinking different amounts of each flavor.
Bah, you're all wrong. The best thing to add to hot chocolate is neither whip cream, marshmallow cream, nor marshmallow.

ICE CREAM RULES THEM ALL.

The ice cream has 2 major advantages over the others.

1) If you need to cool the hot chocolate some, it has that effect too. (and it doesn't weaken it like plain ice would)

2) you can add additional flavor. (Want it more chocolatey? Use Chocolate. Want it minty? Use Mint Choc Chip?, etc.)
A double boiler is a big pot with a smaller pot on top... no need to go get a fancy one.

Also, I have made this using the microwave with no stove action at all. Tastes the same.
I know what a double boiler is. I just live in an apartment with an insanely small kitchen and don't even have enough room for the dishes I do have
Does the milk have to be organic? Don't feel like going out and getting any... lol. I really don't think organic or not will make a difference. Milk is milk, right?
This looks yummy Dave. Im def going to try it out without alliterating it. Thanks for sharing
