Intro: Day of the Dead Gravestones

Add festive bright colors to your Halloween display with this Day of the Dead Gravestone makeover!

This is a fun project for all ages!

After the base coat is applied everyone can join in on the painting fun!

STEP 1: Spray Paint

Start with matte or satin black spray paint to cover that dull grey!

Always use spray paint outdoors with proper eye and breathing protection.

STEP 2: Spooky Fun

The fun really begins with all beautiful and crazy patterns painted on the gravestones. Dry brushing, dots, swirls, spatters.....GO FOR IT and have FUN! Remember, these will be outside and on the ground.....no one will see your "mistakes"!!

Google "Day of the Dead paper plates" for LOADS of inspiration!

This is a truly wonderful small group activity!

STEP 3: Finishing Up

Add loads and loads of cheap fabric flowers with e-6000.

The flowers here are from Walmart for $1-$3 a small bouquet

I used old upcycled gravestones that had long lost their stakes. To create the stakes I used 2 small dowels that were sharpened in my pencil sharpener. Use strong duct tape to adhere the dowels to the back of the gravestones.

Very gently push the stakes into the ground and admire your gorgeous gravestones!

What a great idea. I love to up cycle an old or new piece. Thanks, your tombstones are lovely.
thank you! I'm going to be on the lookout for more used ones at yard sales and thrift stores to paint! It was a really fun art project to do with my teenage daughter, also!!
