Introduction: Decoupage Ornaments

About: I am a conceptual artist, and my DIY projects are mostly inspired by pop culture (movies, music, sports, TV). I mostly specialize in painting, graphic design, drawing, digital photography, performance art, and…

Why throw away old magazines, when you can save them for this fun project, right? Using papier mache ornaments and old magazines, I give you step-by-step instruction on how to make decoupage ornaments!

Step 1: What You'll Need

What you will need to make decoupage ornaments are...

  • papier mache ornaments (I'm using a 2-Dimensional heart and star ornament bought from A.I. Friedman)
  • old magazines
  • X-acto knife
  • Mod Podge
  • sponge brush (not shown)
  • paints and brushes (to paint the edges of your 2D ornaments)

Step 2: Paint the Edges

First, start off by painting the edges of your ornaments, then let dry. I used light pink for the heart ornament and light orange for the star ornament (image not shown).

Step 3: Make Collage

Now, add a layer of Mod Podge, and stick on some cut-up images from old magazines. You can even add some torn-up pieces of tissue paper for added texture. When making your collages, make sure that the pieces stick out from the edges, so that you can cut off the excess with your X-acto knife.

Step 4: Cut Off Excess and Seal

Now, you can cut off the excess using your X-acto knife, then add another layer of Mod Podge on top to seal!

Step 5: Complete!

Now, you're ready to hang some of that nifty craftiness on your Christmas tree! I love the beautiful colors I've chosen for my ornaments and they're super fun and easy to make!
