Introduction: Designing a 3D Printed Flexible Shirt

Today I wanted to show you of an easy and inexpensive way to design and 3D model your own shirt using Fusion 360 and get it ready for 3D Printing in no time!

Step 1: What You Need

In order to create a 3D Printed Flexible shirt you need some basic knowledge of patterndrafting and Autodesk Fusion 360.

If you do not know how to patterndraft here is a very good links that will help you: http://www.clothingpatterns101.com/pattern-draftin...

If you do not know how to use Fusion 360 you can follow these tutorial videos:

The things you will need:

1. Flexible Filament (FilaFlex or NinjaFlex) In my case I used FilaFlex

2. A pattern / technical

3. Scissors and Ruler

4. Flexible Glue (In my case I used Afinitica)

5. A 3D Printer!!

Step 2: Preparing Your Pattern

I decided for my design to use a basic sleveless shirt pattern, it's one of the first things they teach you at Fashion School.

However, I wanted to add scallop designs at the edge of the shirt and make into a crop top. I also wanted to have an open back. You can be as creative as you want with your pattern just don't forget to mark everything.

When you are finally happy with your design

1) Take a good photo of it from the top

2) Use your ruler and take all the measurements of your shirt and write them down

Step 3: Importing Your Pattern to Fusion 360

When you take your photo, open Fusion 360 and import your image.

1)Trace your image using the "Line" and "Spline" tool

2)Make sure that you have all the measurements that you wrote down form the previous step

3)Use the "Measure" tool and make sure distances from each point match with the measurements you wrote down previously.

Step 4: Create Your Own Textile Design

You can now start getting creative with your textile design!

Whether you are a beginner or a master at Fusion 360 it does not matter, you can create whatever you like!!

I decided to create something a bit more organic with elements from nature, using a lot the "Spline" tool.

Step 5: Intersecting Your Textile Design and Pattern

From the technical you made previously we are going to create a 3D model for each piece you want to print.

You will do that by using the "Pull up" and "Extrude" tools.

(My shirt is separated into 11 pieces because the bed of the printer i was using was too small, 9"x7".)

Then take one piece and place it above your textile design.

1. Go to your "combine" tool

2. Choose the piece and the textile design

3. Intersect them

When you complete those moves you will see your textile design in the shape of that piece.

To complete it add a 1mm line on the edges so you can glue each piece together.

Step 6: Flexible Glue

Use any flexible glue to put your shirt together.

Hope this was helpful!!

Happy 3D Printing!!
