Intro: Dettol No-Touch Dispenser Recession Buster Hack

The Dettol No-Touch dispenser is a great bit of kit and looks like a bargain when you place it in the shopping trolley for the reasonable price of £5 for the unit and refill.Alas like most bargains such as printers etc the devils in the detail just how much is the refill going to cost.

If you are not familiar with the Dettol No-Touch it is a battery operated hand wash dispenser you place your hands under the sensor and a portion of hand wash is magically placed in your hand .The advantage of it being non touch is the fact you cant get cross contamination.

STEP 1:

Well as it turns out just like printers they want to start you off cheap with a lost leader and get you into their Eco system buying a new refill regularly.Well as it turns out the refills run at about £3-3.50 which for 250ml is pretty expensive.If you live in a busy family home or small business you could be buying one of these fortnightly or even once a week, if you do the maths that's £182 a year worst case.

I never intended to buy the refills because.....

"if something comes out it generally means it can be put back in !"

You can buy 750ml of  good quality branded anti bacterial hand wash from the pound shop for guess what yes that right £1 that's 3 refills !

Now we just have to get the stuff in ......

First of all we are going to need a bung for the top because as we are going to drill a hole in the top of the empty refill.Measure the bung i found one with a slight taper so it wouldn't fall into the refill if inserted too far.

STEP 2:

Now start with a small drill bit and work your way up in size to that of your bung.

STEP 3:

Use a spoon or blunt screwdriver to lever the cap off the bottom of the refill.Now wash out the inside of the refill to remove any debris from the drilling that might block the Dispenser in use.

STEP 4:

STEP 5:

If  you are struggling to get the liquid into the small hole you can make a paper cone out of a sheet of paper .

STEP 6:

all that's left to do is take the bung out and fill up on your favourite hand wash.

After doing this some friends and family laughed at me but a strange thing happened, while visiting i started seeing this modification quietly popping up all over their homes ..funny isn't it ! :)

This is a waste of money in the first place!

Why does it matter if there are some germs on a soap dispenser when the first thing we do after touching it is wash our hands? We don't touch it again after washing our hands do we?

We have been doing just fine for decades with normal hand dispensers and soap - so what changed recently which makes us need hands free soap dispensers in the home?!

Costly for us and the environment!!

I agree! I think the marketing giants are creating a lot of 'germophobias' on this planet. The only germs that will kill us is of our own making and resistance is futile against the anti-bacterial soaps which weakens our immune system!!

I read this after filling it up via the hole on the cap but painfully slowly using a tiny funnel and watered down liquid soap so it was thin enough to drip through.

I tried taking off the lid but it nearly broke.

I think I’m just going to look for a thinner liquid soap as this is now too watery.

Good for hand sanitiser too at the front door.

This would be awesome for painters' hand cleaner; or for greasy mechanic clean-up. But put one in front of a child--guaranteed massive wastefulness.

every time you remove the bottom cap, you risk breaking an intricate piece, and this way you don't even have to move the dispenser (just fill from the top)....

interesting an easier and cleaner method is to drill a much small hole in the base, take to break the vacuum seal remove the top, fill with your favourite (budget) hand wash, replace into the dispenser and then close over hole in base with a small amount of Selleys thick 2 part adhesive. After it's dry it will look like the plastic belly button and you won't know it's been refilled!

the caps he is speaking of is on the bottom ,not the top. i made a hole with a reamer and did the same with a cork. My problem is that it dispenses way too much soap, and no control like the higher priced models. Any one figure out how to reduce the soap output besides thicker solution.
A wet bar of soap ends up looking pretty gross, i prefer all the touch-less devices we have nowadays.
And you remember that comedian who came from a household of seven plus in the days of old. He said you knew that if you were last in the shower, seven other people washed out their " guess " before you got your hands on it . I prefer the untouched by butt version myself

why would you drill a hole in it if you can take the cap off? why not just fill it like that??

This is a great hack. The dispenser was $6.50 and the refills are $6! It is hugely cheaper to buy a big bottle of liquid soap and do the refilling yourself. I just use a large pair of pliers and turn the top counter clockwise. After refilling, you can just push the lid back on.

I use a 1oz syringe pressed into the valve to refill mine:D
