Diamond Window Cube (Modular Origami)

Follow these steps to make your very own Diamond Window Cube.

I'm not sure about the origin of these types of cubes (please share if you do) or their real name. I've seen many variations of this but they all involve really weird folding to show the white side of the paper. I figured out how to do what I assume is the classic version of these and they turned out really cute. 

I've included pictures of each step for folding the model and also numbered them according to the text I wrote so it should be clear how to make some of these for yourself. I've also labeled the pieces for the assembly step and hopefully that helps too. Happy folding! 

Step 1: Materials

To make a cube you will need 12 pieces of square paper. 

Step 2: The Unit

1. Fold in half then unfold. 

2. Fold the top and bottom edge in to meet the middle crease.

3. Fold the top and bottom edge in to meet the middle crease again. 

4. Flip the model over.

5. Fold down the top right corner, lining up with the edge.

6. Turn the model around 180 degrees. 

7. Fold down what is now the top right corner, lining it up with the edge. 

8. Flip the model over.

9. This fold is a little weird but you want to fold a diagonal line from one of the folded corners to the other (see picture caption).

10. Unfold the folded corner and re-fold to line up with the diagonal fold you just made. 

11. Turn the model around 180 degrees and unfold and re-fold the top right corner again. 

12. Make 12 of these models. 

Step 3: Assembly

Start by holding Piece 1 in your hand and inserting Piece 2 into it as shown in the first picture. 

Insert Piece 3 into Piece 2, as shown. 

Now insert the top part of Piece 1 into the side of Piece 3 to form a triangular point. 

Continue connecting pieces like this until all 12 units are used and a cube is formed. 


If you make a lot of small ones like I did you can use a need and thread to string them and hang as decoration :)

Cool! nice modular origami - it's a good variation of a similar construction I have used for a long while. I used to make polyhedra forms - then I stumbled upon modular origami forms which I found fascinating as I already had a passion for paper folding. It's cool what you can make from a single piece of paper, it's mind expanding what you can do with several pieces........:-D

The assembly stages were all fun, but preparing the 12 pieces for each got a bit dull the third time. It'd be a great thing to do on public transport though :D

FYI: this model is the "Lewis Simon-Bennett Arnstein Cube with Windows" and can be found in _The Beginner's Book of Modular Origami Polyhedra: The Platonic Solids_ by Rona Gurkewitz and Bennett Arnstein...

Cool! A quick google search of that helped me find a copy of this book here and it looks like the thing I made is described as "Modular Cube" on page 25. They used a half piece (2x1) instead of full as I did. 
The diagrams look intimidating at first but I might try to make a few other things showed in the book.
