Introduction: Disco Ball Platform

About: Artist // Lighting Designer

My project idea originated when I became obsessed with this rotating disco ball platform I purchased at a novelty store. I wanted to scale up and integrate it into a large installation art piece.

Step 1: Step 1: Building a Base

The first step was to create a circular base for the disco ball platform so the base could rotate.

I attached the wooden pegs together using mdf board on either side to surround a motor that would propel the base.

Step 2: Step 2: Rotating Platform

I covered the base with a thin board and stapled it together.

Using reflective bathroom tiles, I lined the edge of the platform to create a disco like surface.

Then I used a reflective piece of Plexiglas to cover the top of the platform.

I used hollow rods on the interior of the structure so the motor cord wouldn't get tangled up.

Step 3: Step 3: Adding to the Installation

Along with my other materials, I added the disco ball platform into an installation with moving lights, handmade soft sculpture, a pineapple chandelier (I reupholstered), mirror pyramids, and an audio track to create a dazzling and sensory experience for viewers.
