For this year´s Makers Care the theme are the animals, so I decided to do dog shaped meat cleaver.

Materials: scrap peace of metal, wood for handle, wood stain, pins, glue.

Tools: angle grinder, drill press, files, beltsander, rotary tool, jigsaw, sandpapers, hammer.

Step 1: Blade

I just cut the outside shape using angle grinder with a cut off wheel. Then I adjusted it to final shape with bench grinder. Next I drilled as many and as big holes as I possibly could on my drill press in places between the dogs legs. Later I filed the rough cut holes to their final shapes. Then I created a bevel using beltgrinder and special jig. First I used rough belt (P80) for shaping, then finer (P120) one for nicer look.

Finally I engraved the contours of legs, eye, mouth and ears with a rotary tool.

Step 2: Handle

For the handles I rough cut two pieces of wood with a jigsaw. than I drilled holes in the blade and in the handles and glued them together. Then I ran copper pins through the holes and hammered them in places.

Next I brought the whole knife to my beltsander and shaped the handles to be nice and comfortable. Finally I sanded them with finer grit and applied wood stain as a finnish.

I think the colour of the copper pins really compliments the finish on the handles.
