Supplies

To teach this dog trick, you'll need:

  • Your dog (obviously!)
  • A couple of platforms of varying heights (eg books and a step stool)
  • Treats

Step 1:

You first need to ensure your dog is comfortable putting their paws up on an object. Start with a low object such as a thin book. Lure your dog onto the book, rewarding them when they put their front two paws up on the book.

Step 2:

When your dog is comfortable putting their paws on the book, gradually increase the height of the object they are standing on. You can do this by stacking books on top of each other or finding a low box for your dog to stand on.

Step 3:

Keep increasing the height of the box or object until it is just under or around your dog’s head height.

Step 4:

When your dog is comfortable, cue them to put their paws up and then lure their head downwards.

Step 5:

When your dog is confidently moving their head downwards as they follow the lure, you can add in a verbal cue. I like to use “Hide”.
