Introduction: Dr. Steam’s STEAMPUNK Clockwork Machine
Dear Steampunkers around the Globe
This time I would like to give you some inspiration what you can do with not much money and a few old metal parts from the junk yard.
For me STEAMPUNK means to build fantastic machines and gadgets for almost no money and out from the things which our modern society trashs every day.
So, this time no construction details***... .but I hope this Clockwork Machine can inspire you!!
*** Look at the pictures - be inspired. The whole thing is just a puzzle of different parts from the scrap.
Step 1: Old Clockworks
Old clockworks you can find everywhere for not much money or even for free if you are lucky. My clocks I buy for a few bucks from an old clockworker in the town. He restores watches and often he has clockworks which are in too bad condition to invest time. So I can get them....
So, if you have a clockwork shop in town - go to ask and explain your hobby - may you will find a nice source for clocks....
Step 2: Brass Fittings and More From the Scrap
Often I'm asked from where I get all this nice old brass parts for my artwork. There are different sources for brass. The scrap yard is a good place to make nice finds. But more success you will have when you ask a company which is working with brass fittings and valves, like a plumber or a locksmithery which is working with copper. Bring some chocolate or beer with you when you go to ask.... that opens doors :-)
Step 3: Glass Bulbs for Decoration
May you will ask me now why the light bulbs I used don't shine. OK, that's a fact and I could do that.
But the idea behind this Creation is to work only with parts from the trash. Glass is a very nice material to combine it with brass and it makes your creations more eye catching. So the use of broken bulbs or other glass items is always a welcome variety.
Step 4: Wooden Boxes
Do you have a tobacco shop in your town?
If yes, go to visit them and bring some again some beer or chocolate!! Ask them for the wooden boxes they get together with the cigars from Cuba or other countries. They sell cigars by piece and often the wooden boxes go to the trash. That's sad, because this boxes are great for STEAMPUNK creations!!!
