Introduction: Dragon Knocker 3d Printed - Iron Imitacion

About: I was born in Madrid, Spain. I started drawing and modeling in my early childhood. I studied Fine Arts for five years at the University of Madrid. I like create articulated dolls.

Build a dragon knocker with a metallic finish. Everyone will want to knock on your door!

Step 1: 3d Printing - Dragon Knocker- Imitation Iron / Materials

Materials:

  • 3d model Dragon
  • Pliers
  • Sandpapers
  • Protective gloves and mask
  • Resin XTC - 3D
  • Iron powder (and you can use a sieve to help)
  • 3 glasses of disposable plastic
  • 2 brushes
  • ammonium chloride (ammonium salt)
  • Furniture wax
  • Cloth or brush to polish wax

Step 2: Prints the Dragon

Step 3: Remove Print Supports

Using a pliers, remove the supports and soften the piece with a soldering, you can also use sandpaper.

Step 4: Application of Resin

Prepare a small amount of resin expoxi XTC-3D. This resin is specially designed for printed pieces. It will give strength to the piece, and print layers will soften, resin is self-leveling. The finish of this resin is bright, but we use it to get a metallic finish using iron powder. It is important to work in a ventilated area and wear gloves to protect your hands. For mixing uses two identical disposable cups. Mixing the two liquid components (2A: 1B with a total of 30ml is sufficient) and apply them to the piece with a brush . Mix well for 3 minutes and you will have 10 minutes to spread it over the surface of the workpiece. It is convenient start applying at the bottom of it, but not at the base. To retrieve the brush you can use solvent, always before curing the resin.

Step 5: Dusting Iron

Once the resin applied Expoxi must sprinkle over the iron powder. The resin will absorb iron and should keep pouring until it loses shine and come out matte finish. For this process you have about an hour, since the curing time of the resin is 4 hours, but increasingly absorbs less amount of iron.

Step 6: Sanding

It is convenient to pass 24h to continue with this step, so we allow the resin acquires its final strength.

Needs a "strong" sanding to highlight the reliefs of the dragon and the desired metallic luster appears. Be careful not to sand too because it is possible to remove the film that covers the piece of resin with iron powder. You can also help a brush with metal bristles.

-At this time we could terminate the piece, but if you want to get more realism with a rusty effect, continue with the following steps -

Step 7: Oxidising the Iron

You will find different methods of producing iron oxidation, I have oxidized with ammonium chloride.

Half teaspoon size coffee in half a glass of water and applied with a brush is added

You need not apply oxidant entire workpiece surface. Suffice it to do so in the most hollowed areas under and less relief to mimic a natural oxidation zones.

Step 8: Apply the Wax -

The last step is to apply wax and then rub the piece with a soft cloth or brush. So get set and stop the oxidation process while highlight the metallic sheen.

Apply the wax with a brush, let act at least half an hour before rubbing the surface of the part with a cloth or soft brush.
