Intro: Drumsticks

Just in time for summer, an easy recipe for making your very own Drumstick style ice cream cones - also known in some parts as Cornettos!

You can customize these special treats to suit anyone's tastes. My favorite is half mint chip / half cookies + cream, topped with chocolate and chopped nuts! What will yours be?

STEP 1: Ingredients

To make these tasty treats, round up the following:

  • Ice cream cones
  • Ice cream in your favorite flavors
  • 2 bottles magic shell or make your own! - covers 6-9 cones
  • Nuts (opt.)

STEP 2: READ THE BOTTLE

Clicquot sez "Very important to read bottle."

Bottle sez "Shake me up good!"

Yes, this warrants its own step.

Mostly so I could use kitten pictures. She iz good halper.

STEP 3: Prepare Your Cones

Nestle's Drumsticks have a delicious chocolate-coated sugar cone.

  • Drizzle Magic Shell into the cones and swirling to coat.
  • For an extra treat, add a maraschino cherry or frozen berry to the bottom of the cone
  • Pop 'em in the freezer for a good 10 minutes.
  • While you're waiting, take the ice cream out of the freezer to let it soften up.

STEP 4: Make the Magical Innards

Drumsticks sometimes have a mysterious, magical chocolate center! They didn't when I was a kid, but I fully support this new addition.

To make our chocolatey guts, we'll need:
  • Wax or parchment paper
  • Scissors
  • Tape
  • Pencil, pen, chopstick or something similar in shape.

Make small cones with the wax paper around your pencil and tape.

Fill the paper cones with Magic Shell and freeze!

STEP 5: Fill With Ice Cream

By the time your ice cream is nice and melty, all of the stuff in the freezer should be ready!

I recommend doing this in a different order than is illustrated, so try to keep up here. Do as I say, not as I did.

  • Wrap your cones in wax paper, and cut tops to about 2" above the edge of the cone. (I made a template so I could cut 6 at a time.)
  • Fill cones with melty ice cream up to the top of the cone.
  • Unwrap the chocolate spears you made and place them in the cones
  • Top off the cones with remaining ice cream to within 1/2" of the wax paper

Return to freezer for a few minutes

STEP 6: Top Off

If you're topping with nuts, make sure they're finely crushed.
  • Place nuts in a plastic bag
  • Smash with a hammer

Remove cones from freezer.

  • Pour a small amount of Magic Shell on top of the cones. Quickly add chopped nuts (now that the ice cream's refrozen, the magic shell will set up quickly!)
  • Alternatively, leave the cones in the freezer until very firm, remove wax paper and dip the entire top of the cone into a bowl of magic shell and sprinkle with chopped nuts.

Wrap in decorative paper for extra wow! These make awesome party treats.

My problem with melting the ice cream is that when you re-freeze them you get bigger crystals, defeating the purpose of the more-expensive ice cream (which has smaller crystals and is smoother). So I'd skip the expensive stuff myself and just get tasty but cheap ones.

Don't melt them THAT much! Just enough to be soft to mold

So COOL!!!!! My fav ice cream treat!

Dang, and here I was looking for the recipe for the cone! oh well

How much you paid for all this staff , Sugar cones,Magic Shell, Ice-cream, and nuts?

May be better to buy box of drumsticks in Costco? )))

do you have to use peanuts

she uses peanuts cuz she likes them. i will use pecans {or other actual nuts}, cuz i don't care for peanuts @ all. walnuts are great, but might be a bit over-powering. :^)

They look absolutely perfect!

I came here looking to make drumsticks for my drum kit...

Just crumble the sugar cone and use as a topping for a sundae with all the other ingredients!!

Just crumble the sugar cone and use as a topping for a sundae with all the other ingredients!!

but theres a tiny problem...
the sugar cones got soaked up!!!
That would be where the "coat the inside of the cone with Magic Shell" step comes in... If you did that and it still soaked up, maybe you didn't get the cone fully coated.
Okay, I posted and then noticed my user name considering the post I was replying to: just for the record... THIS Ken is NOT my hubby. I would've pointed this out in our kitchen, not on the internet if it were. :o)
I made these today.. yummo. Discovered a few things though.
1. The small waffle cones are probably the right ones to get because the 2 scoop cones are huge!
2. sticky tape does not stick to baking paper (I had no waxed paper) so I really had to go crazy with the tape around everything.
3. Frozen ice magic spears do not slip out of baking paper easily.
4. Frozen ice magic spears melt very fast once you start handling them, especially when trying to get them out of baking paper cones held together with a mile of sticky tape!
For the ultimate ice cream experience, use a GIANT waffle cone! Man, oh man would that be an amazing treat!
