I am an edgy 15 year old. I sometimes like pretending to be a demon. That is why I felt the need to make wings. I had feathered wings from the costume shop, but they were made of cardboard and kept getting damaged. They were uncomfortable and feathers kept falling off. Then I tried to make complicated hinged wings that would open up when you pulled a string, but I didn’t have the right materials.
Then I came up with these. They are quite limited pose-wise but comfortable and easy to make. I think that they look good but I am quite biased. Give it a try!

Supplies

Felt, fleece or another thick fabric.
Wire. I have wire in mine but it’ll probably work without it.
Thread, needles, sewing machine etc. You could get away without these but it will make the wings sturdier if you double up.
At least 2 safety pins, but up to six.
Ribbons, feathers or whatever else you want as decoration

Step 1: Cutting Out the Wings

The first thing you need to do is cut out the pieces of felt. I did bird-type wings,but nothing is stopping you from making draconic or bat wings. I’d recommend making the wings about the same length as your arms. If you are very lazy, you could just cut out one piece of fabric with both wings. I wouldn’t blame you. I should have done that. But if you want to add wire, or you want sturdier wings, it’s best to double up.

Step 2: Sewing

You should now sew the wings if you plan to sew at all. Sew along the open edge, but leave the last feather open.

Step 3: Adding Wire

If you are using wire, which I recommend, measure a piece slightly shorter than the wingspan. If they wire is quite thin, you’ll have to double up or twist two or more pieces together. I wouldn’t recommend using clothes hangers for the wire because they aren’t flexible enough. When you are satisfied with your wire, put it into the hole you left at the top of the wing and thread it through. Sew along the top of the wing to keep the wire where it should be and close any holes.

Step 4: Attaching Wings to Your Body

Once every thing is sewn up, you must complete the easiest step. Attach safety pins to the wings or pin them to your clothes right away. You definitely have to pin the wings to your shoulders (or waist if you’re into that sort of thing) but I recommend also attaching them to your elbows and wrists. Unless you used thick wire like that of a clothes hanger, the wings will just flop around. Attaching to the wrists and elbows lets you control the wings without having to handle them or using complicated mechanisms. You could even attach loops or bracelets to the wings so that you need fewer safety pins. It would be more visible, but would also work with costumes that have short sleeves. If you try this, I’d recommend hair bobbins or hair ties.

Step 5: That’s It!

Have fun with this. Maybe try decorating with feathers. You can change the wing’s anatomy to be more realistic or bat-like but I think that this is easiest. Have a nice day!
