My wife wanted some lightweight screens that fit our decor, but she didn't want to spend the $100's that would have gone with it. So enter the hubby with a gift for building her stuff. These screens took an afternoon with painting and screening as well.

Step 1: Materials

10 1"x2"x96" (or 8')
Box of staples 1"x1/4" (framing the wood) and 1/2"x1/4" (securing the fabric)
Staple Gun that can use said staples
Finish Nails can be used in place of the staples, I happen to have the gun
Saw - Chop or Hand variety
Paint
Fabric, or Paneling if you'd like

Step 2: Design and Cutting

My design was for a 60"x24" panel with a window style crosspiece in the center. This is where I determined how much wood I would need. If you're making taller or wider panels, please do the math to determine the amount of materials you will need.
I was also making 4 panels, hence the 10 boards.

Cuts
8 at 60"
12 at 24"

I also made a note of the 30" spot on each 60" length to assist with the placement of the "window pane" piece

Step 3: Assembly

Each board was stapled with at least 2 staples at each connecting point. All cross pieces were placed on the same side as well.

Step 4: Rough Finish

Once assembled, we painted the frames and let them dry in the sun. Once dried we stretched fabric that complemented the paint, or used paint that complemented the fabric depending on how you look at it.

I also attached two hinges, evenly placed between two panels so they would stand independently.

Step 5: Finished Panel

If you choose to use paneling instead of fabric your timing for painting may be after you attach the paneling. But regardless, you have easy and custom built screens you can be proud of!
