Recently I have become slightly (very) obsessed with whale sharks. And what do you do when you're obsessed with an animal? Make a small, fluffy version! I made mine weighted too, because why not make it instantly more comforting? This project doesn't use a ton of fabric, making it perfect for using up scraps from previous projects.

Supplies

Materials

One fat quarter bottom fabric (I used cotton print)
One fat quarter top fabric (I used minky)
Thread
2 sheets cardstock or paper
Poly Pellets and/or stuffing
2 safety eyes

Tools

Scissors
Sewing machine (you can hand-sew this, but a sewing machine is easier)
Chalk or water-soluble pen
Printer (not necessary, but makes the process easier)

Step 1: The Pattern

Either print out or trace the attached pattern onto cardstock. I used two different colors to make it easier to see. Then, cut out along the solid lines.

Step 2: The Pieces

Trace your paper pattern onto your fabric using either chalk or a water-soluble marker. You will need two of the top piece and one of the bottom piece. It is important that when tracing, you flip over the top piece so you end up with two mirrored top pieces.

NOTE: I did not include seam allowance in the pdf pattern because I prefer to add it at this step. Make sure to leave room for seam allowance!

Step 3: Sewing the Top Pieces

Pin and sew along the dotted line in the third image. You should be sewing from the top of the head to the crook of the tail.

Step 4: Attaching the Bottom Piece

Make a mark along the center of the whale shark and align the mark with the seam of the whales back (pretty sides of the fabric facing in). Starting at the center mark and seam, pin the bottom piece along the edges of the two top pieces, as shown in the pictures above. Then sew where you have pinned, making sure to leave a hole in one end of the whale large enough to flip the whale shark inside out.

Step 5: Finishing Touches

Flip the whale inside out and attach the safety eyes. Then, using the funnel, fill the whale with poly pellets. Sew your shark shut. Congrats! You've finished!
