Easy and Cute Amigurumi Thanksgiving Turkey

Other than this little blurb, this instructable was written soley by my daughter, pictures taken soley by my daughter, NerdyCrochet, and instructional videos shot soley by my daughter. I don't even know how to crochet or knit, so her pattern is of her very own creation with no help from me. After this, I'll probably let her publish her own instructables under her own username. But for now, my momma-bear instincts still have me keeping her close to me while I can for a little longer. Now onto my daughter's instructable.)

I am kellechu’s daughter--the same one that made the Lego Arduino Circuit Learning Project when I was 9-years-old. Now I am 11 and I have a yarn project that I hope you crocheters will like. I started the hobby of needle arts when I was 10-years-old and I just made my first pattern that I am sharing with others (this one)!

Here is a simple Amigurumi Turkey you can make to celebrate autumn or even Thanksgiving. This can make a fun table centerpiece decoration or a toy for younger kids. I hope you enjoy creating your very own turkey toy from this pattern I created!

Step 1: Supply List and Pattern Abbreviations

Here is a list of supplies you will need to make your very own Turkey Toy.

Stitch marker (to mark your stitches)
Crochet hook (size F)
Scissors (to cut the yarn)
Yarn sewing needle (to sew the different pieces together)
Gold size 4 worsted weight yarn
Red size 4 worsted weight yarn
Yellow size 4 worsted weight yarn
Orange size 4 worsted weight yarn
Beige or Brown size 4 worsted weight yarn
Maroon size 4 worsted weight yarn
Small safety eyeballs (2)
Stuffing or pellets (if you want your animal to be a bean bag) or cut up extra yarn if you don’t have one of the other two.
Sock and rubber band (if using pellets)
A well-lighted, flat area to work

This is an easy pattern using minimal shaping with increases and decreases, the magic circle, single crochet, and double crochet.

Crochet abbreviations:

Inc = increase

Sc = single crochet

Ch = chain

St(s) = stitch

Dbc = double crochet

RS = right side

() = what you repeat/ or the # of stitches at the end of a row or round

FO = finish off

MC = Magic circle

Rp = repeat

Dec = decrease

SS = slip stitch

ShSt = Shell Stitch*

*Shell Stitch = SS in first St. (Work 3 Dec in the next St, SS in next St.) Repeat all the way around the round. You'll end this row with a SS. Finish Off.

Step 2: Turkey Gobble

Turkey gobble (make one in maroon):

Leave a tail at least 4 Inches long on each side so that you can tie it to the face.

Row 1) Ch 6 turn

Row 2) Sc in each St across (5)

Step 3: Turkey Feather Tail

Turkey feather tail (make one yellow, red, orange):

Leave at least one tail that is 18 Inches long for sewing.

Start in the color red.

Row 1) Sc 6 in MC (6)

Switch to the color orange.

Row 7) 5 Sc, Inc (42)

Switch to the color yellow. Fold the circle in half. For the rest of this part you will need to push the hook through both sides. Start on one of the half circle and work your way to the other side.

Row 10) ShSt in all St(s) across*

*Look to the first step of this instructable to see the specific instructions to the shell stitch. It is worked in a smaller version, so it might be different than what you are used to.

Step 4: Turkey Beak

Turkey beak (make one in yellow):

Leave a tail that is at least 4 Inches on each side so that you tie it to the face.

Row 1) Chain 2 turn

Row 2) Sc in the St (1)

Step 5: Turkey Head

Turkey head (make one in beige or brown):

Leave one tail that is at least 18 Inches long for sewing.

Row 1) Sc 6 in MC (6)

Row 3 - 5) Sc in each St across (9)

You will use all of the ends of the yarn to stuff the head.

Step 6: Turkey Body

Turkey body (make one in beige or brown):

Stuff with either pellets wrapped in a sock or stuffing or a cut up yarn ends if you don’t have either of the other two.

Weave loose ends through each stitch in the opening. Pull tightly to close.

Step 7: Turkey Wings

Turkey wings (make two in beige or brown):

Leave one tail at least 18 inches long on each for sewing.

Row 1) Sc 6 in MC (6)

Step 8: Turkey Feet

Turkey feet (make two in yellow or orange):

Leave one tail that is at least 18 inches long.

Row 1) Ch 4 turn

Row 2) SS in each St (3)

Row 3) Ch 4 turn

Row 4) SS in each St (3)

Row 5) Ch 4 turn

Row 6) SS in each St (3)

Step 9: Turkey Toy Assembly

Assembly of turkey toy

Head Assembly:

Attach your small eyes to either side of the turkey head.

Tie the beak on to the turkey head below the eyes.

Tie the gobble on to the turkey head near where his chin would be.

Body Assembly:

Tie the top of the wings (so that they can still move) on the turkey body on either side.

Sew the turkey tail on to the back near the butt or bottom of the turkey body so that the curved part is face up.

Sew the turkey feet on the turkey body near the front but where he would sit.

Final step:

Sew the head of the turkey on to the opposite side of the turkey body where you sewed on the tail.

You can also turn your turkey into a chicken instead! Just remember to omit the gobble and make a small brown tail to replace the large turkey tail to make a cute chicken to pair with your very own turkey toy!
