Introduction: Electric Paper Plane

I saw something like this, one day on the internet and I knew that I will try to build one electric paper plane.

It's really easy to build, but not so easy to fly ;)

How does it work:

You have a supercapacitor in parallel with the small motor. You have to connect the battery to the motor and you will charge the supercapacitor for about 10 to 20 seconds. Remove the charger and the motor will still run with full power.

Step 1: CAD Files

First of all, I used Sketchup 8 to draw the CAD files. It was easyer to test if all the parts will fit.

Step 2: What Do You Need

  • A little piece of plastic
  • thin wire
  • Small Drone Motor with propeller
  • tube with a diameter of 3mm
  • supercapacitor 6 Farad 2.7V
  • 2 pin connector
  • shrink tube
  • epoxy glue
  • Battery box for 2 AA Battery's
  • Diode 1n4001 or equivalent

Step 3: Build the Clip

I used a little plastic L profile and cut it in the middle.

The platic stripe is folded in the middle over a clue or a dill. To fold it use a hot air gun.

On one side cut a 2mm part.

Step 4: Attach the Motor and the Supercapacitor

Run the cable through the tube. Glue the tube with epoxy on the plastic clip. On the other side glue the 2 pin male connector and let dry the glue.

Attach the motor with tape on the tube to hold it in place. Solder the wires from the motor to the thin cable and fix the motor with shrink tube.

The 6 Farad supercap. is soldered to the connector together with the cable.

Step 5: The Charger

For the charger I used a battery box where I removed the switch. The female part of the 2 pin connector is glued with epoxy on the box. Solder the connector in the battery box with a Diode in series. The Diode is used to reduce the voltage from 3V to 2.3V. The supercap. maximum voltage is 2.7V.

Step 6: Fold the Paper Plane

Use a Din A4 paper sheet. Fold it in the middle.

Then fold a triangle and fold it to the inside.

Fold again 2 small triangles like on the photo an then fold the small triangle over this.

turn the paper 180 degrees and fold in in the middle. Fold the wings.

Slide the motor with the clip on the plane and connect the charger for 20sec.

Now your plane is ready to take-off.
