Introduction: Etched Mason Jar Mug
A fun way to use the Silhouette Portrait is to create stencils for etching glassware.
Here we created an etched mason jar mug with our Summer Reading Program logo!
Materials:
- Silhouette Portrait
- Computer with Silhouette Studio software
- Vinyl
- Transfer paper
- Cutting mat
- Spatula tool
- Glass mason jar mug
- Etching Cream
- Popsicle stick
- Water supply (sink)
Step 1: Design & Cut
Open Silhouette Studio software and load the image you want to cut. Resize image to fit the area on the mason jar mug.
Cut vinyl to the size you need for your design. Place vinyl on cutting mat (white backing side down) and feed cutting mat into Silhouette.
In the Silhouette Studio software:
- Open the Cut Settings window
- Material Type: select Vinyl
- Adjust blade size to the number suggested
- Send to cutter
Step 2: Clean Up Design
Unload cutting mat from the Silhouette. Use the spatula tool to remove excess vinyl from the white backing.
Step 3: Apply Transfer Paper
Cut transfer paper in the appropriate size you need to cover your vinyl design. Peel the sticky side (with the red lines) from the white backing and place it over the vinyl design. Use your hand to apply pressure to the transfer paper and vinyl to ensure that all the vinyl pieces adhere to the transfer paper. Slowly remove the transfer paper (with the vinyl) from the white backing.
Step 4: Etching
Line up the transfer paper and vinyl in the area on the mug you want etched. Adhere the vinyl design on the mug. Use your hand to apply pressure on vinyl design and smooth out any bubbles or wrinkles that may have formed. Carefully peel transfer paper. All the vinyl pieces should be stuck on the glass mug.
Apply etching cream in the cut out areas. Follow directions that came with the etching cream to set the duration of time the cream is applied to the glass. When ready to rinse the cream off, run glass under water and rub off excess cream. Carefully peel off the vinyl. Rewash if necessary. Dry glass.
