5 - A pair of gloves

Step 2: Rack & Bag

The bag you choose must be lined with a highly reflective material for the UVC rays to reflect back onto your items to be disinfected.

The items need to be disinfected on all of their surfaces so that is why you need a mesh rack to elevate them off the bottom of the bag.

Put the cooling rack into the bottom of the bag.

Step 3: Assemble UVC Lamp

Place the UVC lamp parts on a clean surface.

I used the bubble wrap that was wrapped around the bulb when shipped.

Wear gloves when assembling the parts of your UVC lamp because oil from hands will damage the UVC bulb.

The lamp I ordered came with the bulb and its holder as one piece but the power cord is separate.

It takes a bit of effort to secure the cord to the lamp so wear gloves!

Step 4: Attach UVC Lamp

Match the twos parts of a velcro circle to itself so both adhesive sides are exposed. It's easier to attach the pieces onto the lamp together and put in place rather than trying to line up the two parts separately.

Attach two piece velcro circles to the back of the UVC lamp.

Firmly press the lamp onto the top flap of the insulated bag.

Make sure the power cord is where the zipper can be closed up close to the cord.

Step 5: Disinfect Items

Place items inside the bag.

Some smaller packaged grocery items can be placed in a medium sized bag along with phones and keys. This is a box of crackers standing on it's end along with a large smart phone.

Securely close the zipper as close as possible around the power cord.

Put the bag and lamp into a room away from people and pets.

Make sure the bag is completely closed before turning the UVC lamp on.

NEVER look at the UVC lamp when it is on or expose your skin to it.

You can see in the darkened room that a small amount of the UVC light does come through the edges of the zipper. So DO NOT STAY IN THE ROOM WHILE THE UVC LAMP IS ON.

Many on-line resources says that 10-15 minutes is the amount of time needed to disinfect phones and keys.

Some UVC lamps come with plug-in timers so set it so the UVC lamp turns off after 10-15 minutes. The timer which came with my lamp did not work so I use a timer in the kitchen.

After the 10-15 minutes turn off the UVC lamp and leave the bag closed in the empty room for at least 30 minutes to allow the ozone to decompose and dissipate to safe levels.
