FIX STUCK WINDOW HANDLE - AGGIUSTARE MECCANISMO MANIGLIA FINESTRA BLOCCATO

After 50 years of service the time has come to fix the handle of this window which no longer closed well, initially it was difficult to turn it until it almost stopped completely. So I decided to take it apart and see where the problem was.

Dopo 50 anni di servizio è arrivato il momento di sistemare la maniglia di questa finestra che non si chiudeva più bene, inizialmente era difficile girare la maniglia fino a che ultimamente si è bloccata quasi del tutto. Quindi ho deciso di smontarla e vedere dov'era il problema.

Flathead screwdriver
Metal cup brush

Lubricating oil (Engine oil is perfect)

Step 1: Remove the Mechanism From the Window

With the flathead screwdriver we unscrew the 4 screws that hold the handle fixed to the wooden frame of the window, once removed we also extract the square bar that connects the handle to the actual mechanism of the window. Still using the flathead screwdriver, unscrew the 2 screws that secure the mechanism to the window. Now it no longer has constraints and can be extracted by pulling it, if it is blocked as happened to me, just use the screwdriver to lever it into the hole in the square bar and it will come out in just a second. As you can see the mechanism is full of dust, rust and dried grease and for this reason it was blocked

Con il cacciavite a taglio svitiamo le 4 viti che tengono fissata la maniglia al telaio in legno della finestra, una volta rimossa estraiamo anche la barra quadra che collega la maniglia al meccanismo vero e proprio della finestra. Sempre con il cacciavite a taglio svitiamo le 2 viti che fissano il meccanismo alla finestra. Ora non ha più vincoli e può essere estratto tirandolo, se è bloccato come è capitato a me basta fare leva con il cacciavite nel foro della barra quadra e uscirà in un secondo. Come vedete il meccanismo è pieno di polvere, ruggine e grasso secco e per questo motivo era bloccato

Step 2: Disassemble the Mechanism and Clean It

As you can see there are two slotted screws that will need to be unscrewed, once done we can remove the cover that closes the rack system. If you are not familiar with it, take a photo of the system to avoid wasting time reassembling it later. We remove all the parts inside as you can see they are not in excellent condition they are dirty and there is not even the slightest trace of lubricant. At this point we take the drill, and with the metal cup brush we clean every single piece. I recommend clamping them in a vice and at least using gloves, when you have finished all the pieces, take a cloth with some alcohol and clean them all to remove the iron filings that the brush leaves.

Come potete vedere ci sono due viti a taglio che andranno svitate, una volta fatto possiamo togliere il coperchio che chiude il sistema a cremagliera. se non siete pratici fate una foto per evitare di perdere tempo dopo a riassembarlo. Togliamo tutte le parti all'interno, come potete vedere non sono in ottime condizioni sono sporche e non esiste nemmeno una minima traccia di lubrificante. A questo punto prendiamo il trapano, e con la spazzola metallica a tazza puliamo ogni singolo pezzo, consiglio di bloccarli su una morsa e usare almeno i guanti. Quando avrete finito tutti i pezzi prendete un panno con dell' alcool e puliteli tutti in modo da togliere la limatura di ferro che lascia la spazzola.

Step 3: Assembly and Greasing

Now take each individual piece and use a spray lubricant and pass each individual piece including the crankcase. Take the crankcase and put a drop of engine oil inside it, and slowly reassemble the mechanism, placing a drop of engine oil on the friction parts of each piece. Close the cover with the two screws and check that it works correctly (otherwise you have mistaken the positions of the pieces in the reassembly.) at this point the mechanism is ready, it has smooth and light movements, it does not block when I turn the handle. Having said this, I remount it on the window and also mount the handle.

Adesso prendete ogni singolo pezzo e con un lubrificante spray passate ogni singolo pezzo carter compreso. Poi prendiamo il carter e gli mettiamo all interno una goccia di olio motore, e rimontiamo piano piano il meccanismo mettendo una goccia di olio motore sulle parti che vanno in attrito di ogni pezzo. Richiudiamo il coperchio con le due vitie controlliamo che funzioni nella maniera corretta,( in caso contrario avete sbagliato le posizioni dei pezzi nel riassembaggio.) a questo punto il meccanismo è pronto ha i movimenti lisci e leggeri ,non si blocca quando giro la maniglia. Detto questo lo rimonto sulla finestra e monto pure la maniglia.
