Introduction: CDC Approved Cloth Face Mask With N95 Filter

About: Dental hygienist

The CDC is now accepting these handmade masks to use in the hospital.
I am a Registered Dental Hygienist who has studied infection control for over 35 years .This is a virus proof face mask that I created for my family. We have 2 sons with heart failure that we need to protect. I was unable to find a face mask for children that was filtered, waterproof, droplet proof and machine washable. I am sharing for other families with the same dilemma.

Supplies:

7 inches of waterproof fabric. I purchased diaper cover fabric.
7 inches of cotton liner
1 yard narrow elastic or 1 inch x 8 inch polar fleece (4 pieces)
Sewing machine ,scissors, needle and thread , pins
Paper , pencil , and ruler for pattern making
N 95 filter or surgical face mask

Step 1: Face Mask

Create a pattern and cut out the approximate size . It’s best to make it a little big. Cut out two pieces each of the 2 fabrics.
Sew the 2 sets of pieces together, right sides together along the curved edge.
Open out and put the lining and front pieces together right sides together.
Sew the tops of these pieces .
Open out. Turn under the side edges and sew.
Add two pieces of elastic to both sides. If elastic is unavailable you can use the polar fleece fabric insead.
Sew the bottom edge.
Turn right side out.
Edge stitch top and bottom.
Feed filter or surgical mask through the channel.
Congrats! You’re ready for flu season ,!

You need to insert a filter in to the channel.

You can use the filter paper from a unused furnace filter, make sure you get one that’s rated to remove virus. Just take the furnace filter apart and flatten the folds cut to fit you can do 2 layers if you like.

No, please do not use furnace filters. They have glass and/or fibreglass particles that are detrimental to inhalation. You're better off with simply a coffee filter or a paper towel that can be removed and replaced. The two or three layers of tightly woven cotton do a good job in and of itself, albeit not to the standard of a proper N95 protective filter.

So you are claiming that the furnace filters that we use to remove contaminants from the air in our homes contain inhalation damaging particles. What would you suggest we use in our furnaces, paper towels?

The only thing that would make this of N95 quality is an N95 mask itself.
These home-made masks are simply a precaution, and not to normal medical standards.

I think your post and especially the title are very irresponsible. This is in no way CDC approved, and is most definitely not N95. I've pointed out some of the flaws and dangers in your design and you have not acknowledged or changed them, to create a safe instructable. It should be titled, How To Smother Yourself.
Please have some consideration for the consequences of your actions.

What is the filter material? When I search cotton liner I get mostly panty liners. Would those work?

You can use the filter paper from a new furnace filter that is rated to prevent virus transmission.

I'd be cautious about using furnace filters. You don't know what chemicals they are treated with. At the very least, give the material a wash first. Still, not meant to be put on our face.

Thanks that was the most helpful response I've gotten. I looked up filters. Something with a MERV rating of 14 or higher is effective.

Tip 1 year ago on Step 1

If you have a unused cloth surgical mask: Fold into half. Now, Fan open the front part trace around. Before cutting out: Add 1/4 in seam allowance around. Then cut out your template . Trace on your required pieces of fabric . Sew and then enjoy.
Note: Using Waterproof fabric should be your outside piece.
Extra Note: If you have Light Weight Interfacing do not add the seam allowance : It act like a filter as well (If no waterproof fabric is available).

I don't understand why people are recommending waterproof fabric. This equates to putting a plastic bag on your face, as I mentioned above, can be very dangerous.

I'm unsure how this is filtering. If you have a layer of waterproof fabric, how can you have air passing through? From what you describe, the only access for air, is through the sides, which is no better than no mask at all. Even the best Gortex fabric would not allow enough air to pass through, to breath. Try sucking air through your rain jacket. I suspect your diaper covers are not breathable at all. The air you breath must pass through the "filter".
For masks to be effective they must seal against the face and not allow any air in, around the face. The more resistance from the "filter" fabric, the more air will be pulled in around the mask. Sorry, I don't mean to be so critical, but I think this could be dangerous, and not allow enough air to breath, if the mask is snug, especially for children.
If you were to ditch the waterproof fabric, for any kind of breathable fabric, and use a mask inserted as you show, then It could have some filtering ability, but definitely not N95, unless you are inserting a N95 mask, even then, not the way they are meant to be used. N95 must be properly fitted to the face.

It is if the filter you put in it is rated for protection against virus.
