Introduction: Fan Housing Baskets for Kitchen Storage

About: I'm a refugee from Los Angeles, living in backwoods Puerto Rico for about 35 years now and loving it. I built my own home from discarded nylon fishnet and cement.

I have a high ceiling and like to hang things overhead, out of the way.   In the kitchen, these overhead see-through fan housing baskets are ideal for keeping an eye on food products.

People throw away electric fans all the time.  I rescued these two fan housing halves from my neighbor's trash.  

You can make single baskets that hang with wire from an overhead hook, or you can hang multiple baskets in series, like this double basket design. 

Step 1: Materials

You will need the fan housing, some galvanized tie wire, a pair of pliers, and a hook made of 1/4 inch iron rebar, or some other suitable material. 

The wires are attached to the hook, and the four free ends dangle down to hold the baskets. 
I bend the rebar either with pliers, or with a 2-pin bending jig. 

Step 2: Attaching the Hook

I cut two pieces of wire about 10 ft. long and bent them in half to give me four wire ends hanging down.    I twisted about a foot of their length with the help of a vise and rod-like piece of metal. 

I then got the eye end of the twisted wire worked into the rebar hook and twisted it a few times around the hook.  This secures the hook so that you can hold the basket from underneath while placing the hook higher than you could normally reach.

Step 3: Hanging the Baskets From the Hook


If the lengths of your wires from hook to the top basket are the same, the basket will hang level.  If the wires between baskets are the same, the baskets will be parallel.
