Five Dollar Window Box

Intro: Five Dollar Window Box

I had just painted my brick house white and it needed a splash of color, so I decided to build these window boxes. They only cost five dollars (cost of lumber) for each box and they add so much to the front of the house. Here is how they were made...

STEP 1: Cut and Assemble

The first thing I did was cut the "dog ear" off of the end of the fence pickets which left me with squared boards. Then I cut them down to size. For a complete list of materials used and a cut list, visit me at The Crafted Maker .

I attached the boards to form a box without a top.

STEP 2: Painting

I painted the boxes before hanging. I used some front door paint leftover from another project. I used three coats in total. The inside was left unpainted, dirt will cover up the unpainted wood.

STEP 3: Mounting the Window Boxes

Since the exterior of the house was brick, a hammer drill was needed to attach the box to the house. Once the holes were drilled, I took off the front part of the box and screwed into the brick.

If you have a different exterior such as vinyl or wood siding, a regular drill can be used instead of a hammer drill.

That's all there is to it! This is such an easy and fast project that added so much to the front of my home.

Because they are made of wood, you could paint or stain them any color to match the color scheme of your home!

Looking good! I suggest adding spacers/offsets between back of box and wall, also drilling drainage holes in box bottom. Thanks for sharing!

Do those plants need watering and drainage? Are you sure that the dirty water won't make your white walls look dirty?
