Winter is here! A smart, easy to make fleece hat that can be made from a piece of fleece or faux throw blanket or a scarf.

Step 1: Getting Ready:

You will need
Piece of white paper 24 length and 25 width (24”L x 25”H inches) to create sewing patterns
24’L x 25’H total in fabric for face, outer part of a hat (fleece)
24’L x 15’H total for lining (cotton)
About 50 inches crochet lace or any soft ribbon
Ruler, drawing compass, pencil, marker, scissors

Step 2: Let's Get Started:

We will make a sewing pattern for S-L sizes.
Measure your head as shown on the picture above, write it down.
Hat sizes:
Large 24 3/4”
Medium up to 23 3/4”
Small up to 22 3/4”
After making sewing patterns you will end up with 3 pieces of paper for your hat:
hat top, hat crown, hat brim.

Step 3: Making Hat Top Pattern:

Make a point on a piece of paper. Mark it with letter M, it will be a center. Radius from M will be for a large size 3 4/8” inches (R-L 3 4/8”). Take drawing compass and draw a circle with 3 4/8” radius. Radius for medium size is 3 1/8”, small is 2 6/8”.
Cut out the top of a hat as per your size.

Step 4: Hat Crown Pattern:

On a piece of paper draw a rectangle with length 24 3/8” and high 5 2/8”. Mark two top points BT (B T- top) and two bottom points BB (B B - bottom). Find a midpoint along the length line - 24 3/8”. Mark it as M on both BT and BB lines of the rectangular.
Fold the piece of paper along MT and MB points. Basically you evenly dividing your rectangular, folding it in half. Please take a look at the pictures for visual clarity.
From midpoint M (top MT) mark points 2” length toward right BT point (MT -> BT). From the BT point measure 2” toward MT point, (BT -> MT) and write letter T. Mark points as M1, M2, M3, M4. From MT-BT line drop down lines from each M1,2,3,4 points:
MT - 2”
M1 - 1 7/8”
M2 - 1 6/8”
M3 - 1 6/8”
M4 - 7/8”
Connect all M points by drawing a line that will end at point T.
From midpoint M (bottom MB) mark points 1” length toward right BB point (MB -> BB). From the MB point measure 1” toward BB point, (MB -> BB). Mark points as M1 - M11 Total 11 points. From MB-BB line drop down lines from each M1 - M11 points:
MB - 1”
M1 - 1”
M2 - 1”
M3 - 1 1/8”
M4 - 1 2/8”
M5 - 1 3/8”
M6 - 1 3/8”
M7 - 1 2/8”
M8 - 1 1/8”
M9 - 1”
M10 - 6/8”
M11 - 4/8”
Connect all M points by drawing a line that will end at point BB point.

From point BT make points down toward BB with 1” distance between them. Mark them as B1 to B4. To create edges of the sewing pattern, it will be a curve (look for reference to pictures) mark lines from each point B toward center.
B1 - 1 1/8”
B2 - 7/8”
B3 - 4/8”
B4 - 2/8”
Connect all B points starting from T ending BB.
This edge line will be for large size hat. For medium size measure 4/8” from the edge of a large size line. For small size measure 4/8” from the edge line of medium size. Look at the pictures for reference, where L, M S letters are.
Make sure all points is connected and cut a piece still keeping paper folded in half. Unfold it and you have the Hat Crown in real size, ready to be transferred to the fabric.

Step 5: Hat Brim Pattern:

On a piece of paper draw a rectangle with length 24 1/2” and high 3 6/8”. Mark two top points AT (A T- top) and two bottom points AB (A B - bottom). Find a midpoint along the length line - 24 1/8”. Mark it as MT (T for top) and MB (B for bottom) on both AT and AB lines of the rectangular.
Fold the piece of paper along MT and MB points, folding your rectangular in half. Please take a look at the pictures for visual clarity.

From AT point measure 1” toward M point and mark it as M6. Do the same along AB line from AB point toward center, M point, and mark it M6. From midpoint M (top MT) mark points 2” long toward right AT point (MT -> AT). Mark points along AT and AB lines as M1, M2, M3, M4, M5. Draw up lines from AT line and draw down lines from AB line at each M point as follow. Length from MT (T - top) point up and MB (B- bottom) down for each M point:
MT - 1”
M1 - 7/8”
M2 - 6/8”
M3 - 5/8”
M4 - 4/8”
M5 - 2/8”
Connect all top M points and all bottom M points by drawing a line ending at M6 point.

The edge line AT -> AB is for large size. For medium size measure 4/8” toward inside (midpoint) and draw parallel line. For size small measure 4/8” from line for medium size, draw parallel line and it will be the edge line for a small size hat. Please look at the picture for visual reference where letters L,M,S are.
Make sure all points is connected and cut a piece still keeping paper folded in half. Unfold it and you have the Hat Brim in real size, ready to be transferred to the fabric.

Step 6: Transferring Our Patterns to Fabric:

Pin patterns to your fabric, fleece, along edges. Add 1/2" for seams along each edge.
!!! Please make sure that you transferred to lining fabric only Hat Top and Hat Crown patterns. Hat Brim does not have lining!!!

Step 7: Putting All Together:

Before putting pieces together, the edges of each piece of fabric should be finished with either an overlock or zigzag machine stitch.
Stitch on together lining pieces first, Hat Top with Hat Crown.
Attached a piece of lace or ribbon around right side of fleece Hat Top piece. Then stitch together pieces of fleece fabric, Hat Top and Hat Crown, creating one top piece of a hat, as per pictures. Insert lining hat’s top piece into outer, fleece, hat’s top. Saw them together along the edge.
Now we will combine together Hat Brim with already created hat’s top. For this stitch face side edge of Hat Brim with the hat’s top inner lining side, as per picture.
Next fold in half Hat Brim piece and stitch it along the binding line that you just saw. Fold inside the edge of the Hat Brim about 1/2” inside while stitching.
The lace along the hat’s brim i attached by hand. First put on hat and then wrapped the lace around the hat’ brim and tighten it on the back. I attached it to the fleece fabric in 4 places, sides, back and front. One cannot see it being attached by hand but it gives prettier look being attached by hand rather than being sawn into fabric.

Step 8: Finally:

That is it! :)
You can add variations to the hat by adding a button or applique or some other different accessories to it.
