Intro: Floating Candle

Turn a cup into a beautiful candle with this instructable. Make a kit for later use or for a quick gift. Why not? It's so easy to make!

STEP 1: Materials

For this candle, you will need:

Rocks
Vegetable oil
Candle
Highlighter
Glass cup
Plastic protection sheet

STEP 2: Cut Your Plastic

Cut your plastic protection sheet into squares. They should be pretty small. After you have your squares, cut small x's in them. I find that putting a piece of colored paper behind it helps you see the plastic better.

STEP 3: Prepare Your Wicks

Take off the wax on your candle. It's similar to stripping wire, so you could use a wire stripper, but I don't have one so I had to use my hands. Next, cut the wick into pieces that are around an inch tall.

STEP 4: Spicing It Up- Part One

To make the candle look more interesting, drop in a couple of small rocks inside. I like to put the larger ones on the bottom and the smaller ones on top.

STEP 5: Water!

Before step 6, you'll first need water. Pour it in. Leave some space at the top.

STEP 6: Spicing It Up- Part Two

If you want to go even further, get a highlighter. Take off the cap at the bottom and use a pencil to get the felt out. Squeeze the ink into the water. Mix it until that water is the desired shade.

STEP 7: Adding the Oil

Pour a layer of oil on top of the water. It should be around one fourth of a inch thick.

STEP 8: Putting the Wick In

Insert the wick through the x you cut in the plastic. Place it in the glass. Make sure that the wick is touching the water.

STEP 9: Light It Up!

Light the wick! I use a stick of spaghetti to do this.

Of course! I only had a highlighter handy so I just used that.
Very nice. These would look amazing in green and red for xmas. Thank you for sharing this! Could I use food dye to colour the water?
