Introduction: Fly Line Winder

Fairly simple to build fly line winder for adding backing and fly line to a reel and removing line for storage.

Materials consist of wood (preference is poplar...easy to work and tight grain), several bolts & washers, a couple screws and two purchased components:

1. Line Counter (purchased on eBay from China for under $10.00 (shipping included)

2. Butt section of a fishing rod to use as a reel mount (if you don't have an old rod to cannibalize, then buy the cheapest rod you can find, probably $8-10.

Attached video shows the device and how it works. Attached PowerPoint presentation shows the design drawings

Device, as shown, does not yet have a wood finish (e.g. polyurethane). It can also be aesthetically improved with beveled edges on the wood and some additional contouring using a router. Also, I plan to replace the rubber feet with suction cups, which will aid in stability when winding.

Works extremely well for multiple functions related to fishing line loading and removal.

Howard, do you have a cut list for all components for this fly line winder?

This is a very clever design for a line winder!

Whenever I put line on my reels, it usually started with a phrase something like this, "Hey hun, would you hold this spool for a minute?"

This is a nice and clean looking device. Thanks for sharing it here!
