Great Scott, it's 2015!

There's never been a better time to throw a Back to the Future themed party, in honour of the movie's 30th anniversary and Marty and Doc's travels to the era of hoverboards and flying cars.

What better way to get people excited about your party than a card with a shiny time machine that appears to fly into the air?

My partner and I designed this flying DeLorean card for our son's birthday party later this year, but it would make an equally awesome wedding save the date card.

Step 1: Materials and Tools

To make this card, you'll need:

  • Ink jet printer
  • Cardstock (light grey and dark grey)
  • Clear acetate sheets
  • Printable silver foil (optional - you can use cardstock instead but it won't be shiny)
  • ¼" foam tape
  • Glue stick
  • Electronic cutting machine or an X-acto knife and a very steady hand
  • Attached Silhouette Studio files (you can download Silhouette Studio for free at

Step 2: Printing and Cutting

We designed the card in Corel Draw and then imported it to Silhouette Studio in order to use the Silhouette Portrait's print and cut functions.

Before printing and cutting, you'll want to edit the file to change the details to fit your party's time and location. A segmented font is best - we used a font called Digital 7.

Print the flying DeLoreans on printable silver foil with an inkjet printer. The foil sheets kept slipping in our printer, so we needed to put painters tape on the back of the sheets to get them to feed through the printer properly.

Cut out the DeLoreans with your electronic cutting machine. We sometimes had trouble getting the Silhouette Portrait to find the registration marks on the reflective foil. If this happens to you, put masking tape on the corners of the foil sheets before printing.

Print the card pieces on light grey cardstock and then cut them out.

Cut out the acetate pieces and dark grey pieces.

Step 3: Assembling the Card

When you remove the pieces from the cutting mat, they might be slightly curved but they will flatten out when attached together.

Start by folding the "Roads?" piece along the perforated lines.

Add foam tape around three sides of the "Where we're going..." piece and stick the "Roads?" piece on top.

Insert the pull tab piece and glue the bottom edge to the "Roads?" piece.

Step 4: Adding the DeLorean and Back Pieces

Stick the silver foil DeLorean to the acetate piece.

Glue the acetate to the "Roads?" piece, so the car appears to be flying when the tab is pulled.

Flip the card over and glue down the dark grey piece.

Glue the "Save the Date" piece on top of the dark grey.

Step 5: Finished Card

Your card is finished! It should fit in a standard invitation sized envelope.

There's a hole in the pull tab so you can add a ribbon or tassel if you want.
