Introduction: Fondant Bee Cake
That's the fondant cake I made for the 1. birthday of my daughter, we playfully call bee :)
I started with 2 cakes, my mother thankfully prepared and already coved in buttercream.
Step 1: Supplies
- White fondant 1 kg
- food colouring gel (yellow, sunflower, leaf green and red)
- small sugar flowers
- a black food colouring pen
- food glue
- flower and leaf cutters in different sizes (I bought mine very cheap on amazon)
Step 2: 1. Cover the First Layer of the Cake in Fondant
Work on a large, smooth surface and lightly dust it with starch, sifted through a nylon stocking (gurantees finest powder) to prevent the fondant from sticking to your work surface and turning too white.
Allow your fondant to reach room temperatur to make it easier to work with. Knead it until its soft and nice to work with.
Flatten the lump of fondant with your hands in a round shape.
Roll out your fondant 0.5 - 1 cm thick.
Measure the fondant, it it is big enough to cover your cake and the plate.
Take the fondant and lay on the cake. Sometimes it is helpful to have 2 more helping hands.
Smooth the fondant over the cake. Start on the top, then smooth down the sides. Avoid folds, wrinkles and air bubbles by all means.
Trim off the excess fondant with a knife or a pizza cutter.
Step 3: Cover 2. Layer in Fondant
Use 4 bamboo sticks as long as the first layer of the cake is high. Stick the bamboo sticks in the 1. layer where the 2. layer should be placed (for stabilisation).
Repeat step 1 for the 2. layer of the cake.
Step 4: Making the Beehive
Take some dark coloured fondant (in my case I took some deep blue leftovers) and form a dome 2 cm diameter and 3 cm high.
Take a yellow coloured fondant (I took my white fondant and coloured it yellow with some liquid food colouring) and form a string with a diameter of ~ 0.5 cm. Wrap the string around the dome until it is fully covered.
Cut a small door in the yellow fondant.
Colour fondant yellow, sunflower and green. Start with less colour. Roll out fontant 0.5 mm thick.
After cutting a bunch of flowers of different sizes and shapes add some food colouring and repeat prozess several times to get different shades of the same colour.
Do the same with the leaves.
Step 6: Assemble the Flowers
Glue flowers together as shown.
Add a small sugar flower in the center.
Step 7: Assemble
Glue flowers and leaves on the 1. layer of the cake.
Cut some ovals from some yellow leftovers and draw black stripes and a eye on each with the black food colouring pen. Glue the bees to the 2. layer of the cake.
Use the black food colouring pen to draw some lines as shown on the pictures.
Use the liquid green food colouring and a toothpick to draw the flowers stem.
Put the bee hive on top.
Step 8: Enjoy the Party
Admire and enjoy.
