Introduction: Fool's Gold Sandwich
I first heard about a fool's gold loaf a few years ago. I made a variation of it in my kitchen and I have to admit, it was delicious. I put a little background info I found on the internet.
From Wikipedia
Fool's Gold Loaf is a sandwich made by the Colorado Mine Company, a restaurant in Denver, Colorado. The sandwich consists of a single warmed, hollowed-out loaf of bread filled with the contents of one jar of creamy peanut butter, one jar of grape jelly, and a pound of bacon. The sandwich's connection to Elvis Presley is the source of its legend and prolonged interest. According to The Life and Cuisine of Elvis Presley, it was the focus of a midnight sandwich run by Elvis Presley and his friends. Taking his private jet from Graceland, Presley and his friends purchased 22 of the sandwiches and spent three hours eating the sandwiches and drinking Perrier and champagne before flying home. The story became legend and the sandwich became the subject of continued media interest and part of numerous cookbooks, typically focused around Presley's love of food.
If you wish to try the original version, I've included it at the end of the instructable.
Step 1: Ingredients
Peanut Butter, smooth or chunky (I used smooth)
Grape Jelly
Sliced Bread (white or wheat)
Bacon
Step 2: Prepare It
Cook 4 slices of bacon. I prefer to bake it at 350 degrees Fahrenheit on a rack to drain most of the grease, but you are free to fry it up. Set it aside to cool slightly.
Take three slices of bread and apply peanut butter to one slice, jelly to the another, and put the bacon on there.
Step 3: Eat It Before Your Wife Gets Home
Like it says, eat it! It's delicious, with the salty crunch of the bacon and the sweetness of the PB & J. Then maybe go for a jog.
The original recipe is as follows.
1 loaf Italian bread (must be white!)
2 tablespoons butter 1 lb lean bacon, cooked (note ~ must be lean?!) 1 (10 ounce) jar smooth peanut butter 1 (10 ounce) jar grape jelly Fry up the bacon and drain it well. Brush the loaf with butter and warm it up in the oven. Cut it in half and scoop out some of the bread. Spread all of the peanut butter on one side and all of the jelly on the other. Put the bacon on close her up. Cut the sandwich up and share it with 6-8 of your friends. Or eat it all then see your doctor, lol.
