Intro: Found: Kelp Poi

free poi! on the beach! no, not the kind you can eat!

Billy and I were walking near the Sutro baths, and found all this handy kelp!

STEP 1: Materials

KELPY KELPY KELP KELP

You can do this anywhere that has kelp. It washes up on the beach.

Step 1) Slice off the hairy, bearded end, and snip to length with your knife

STEP 2: Assembly

Stick one in the other

OHH YEAH!

Kelp has built-in universal fittings for connecting one piece to another.

Improvise.

Now you have a poi rope, or whip, or double-ended-poi-chain.

STEP 3: Spin It

Woo!

Kelp can take a lot of strain! The biggest issue is when the slippery seaweed flies out of your hands!

Enjoy spinning on the beach!

Awesome! Can't you tie a knot in the end for the handle?

hippie. looks slimy.
Is hippie supposed to be an insult? I'm no longer sure. Kind of sad if it is.

Lol last pic looks like you hit yourself in the face
Not quite poi, but there fun to whip your friends with :P
"they're" I'm no hardcore grammar nazi, but this is something people learn by age 10...
Me to.                                                                      .
Poi are/were used by the Maori of New Zealand in dances. I think they could also have been used as weapons. They are fun to make (made them at school with crumpled newspaper wrapped in plastic bags, then used a plaited rope as the handle), and fun to swing about. A really talented person can take two poi and have them held in one hand swinging in opposite directions - I was never that good.
We used toilet paper, plastic bags and wool for the handles to make ours at school, with sellotape to hold it together. I heard that the Maori had rocks at the end and were tied with flax and that the men would use them to strengthen their wrists. And for a laugh Youtube 'Poi E by Patea Maori Club'
At chur camp I found one thaw was at least 30 feet long ands I decicded I was going to be majors wrath. It ended with me hitting my self so hard that I coukldn't breath for a few seconds. Also I hurt my back.
I found one of those about a month ago, but it was about three times bigger and was 25 feet long! it also had antler looking things so it looked like an alien. It was creepy. If i can find the photo of it I will post it.
You can make these out of soccer socks and other socks. You just take one sock, stuff it in another, stuff it in another and repeat that untik the ball is big enough and stuff it in the soccer sock. Suprisingly it gets very hard.
Poi, Yeah, I was thinking taro-pudding! That is cool though. Put it in your checked baggage!!!!
like fire poi, part of teh GS culture. PLUR and all, but... honestly, this looks really groddy. all sandy and salty and nasty. also pretty pointless. But! if youre bored at the beach, i gues you gotta do something.
