Free Bike Wheel Tools-- Nipple Inserter and Power Drive Bit

Here is the scenario. Your spokes are stretched, you can no longer true your rim. Maybe it's time for replacing the spokes with new and save your hub and rim from the dumpster.

Step 1: Get an Old Spoke

Cut the spoke to about 6 inches long.

Step 2: The Threaded Side

Grind or file to a point

Step 3: Assemble

An electrical wirenut works perfect for the cut side.

Step 4: Inserting Nipples Into Rims

Insert the pointy side into the nipple and slightly turn, the nipple will attach to the inserter. Then place in rim hole and attach spoke to nipple by turning wire nut cap.

Step 5: The Final View

Use the nipple to cover the pointy side for storage.

Step 6: The Nipple Driver

First you start with a flatblade bit. If you have ever laced a rim, you know there will be lots of turns with a spoke wrench initially. This will speed up the process using a power screwdriver. I would recommend a slow rotation screwdriver, 200 rpm or less

Step 7: Start Filing or Grinding

Start filing or grinding the bit back leaving the center as is. Constantly check with a spoke nipple. Take your time, speed is not your friend here.

Step 8: Done

When it is done, the point will fit into the hole of the nipple and the edges will fit the slot of the nipple. A great timesaver.
