Intro: Fried Mozzarella Balls With Homemade Tomato Sauce

A week or so back I had a chance to taste fried mozzarella balls with tomato sauce. These were served to us alongside with some other deep fried appetizers. The mozzarella balls were absolutely divine and I knew back then that I would be trying to copy them and get as close to the delicious flavours as possible.

I haven’t even done any research related to this subject. I have to say that there was no reason for that as I had had the picture in my head for a good while and knew that it would simply be about improvisation. Anyway, what can go wrong here, right? I think I have succeeded and I am happy with the look and the taste of both the sauce and the balls.

This is a pretty simple recipe and it really is worth the while (not that it takes long to make these)!

So for all mozzarella lovers or those who are looking for new party snack ideas, or actually anyone who loves to try new recipes, here it is.

STEP 1: Ingredients:

For the mozzarella balls:

20 pcs or 150g Mozzarella Mini Balls (Bocconcini)

1 Medium-Large Egg

80g Breadcrumbs

1-2 Tea Spoons Dried Marjoram (or Oregano)

3 Table Spoons Plain Flour (30g)

Milk (optional) 600ml Vegetable or Sunflower oil for frying (use a small sauce pan for frying)

For the tomato sauce:

100g Tinned Tomatoes

½ Tea Spoon Salt

1 Garlic Clove

1 Table Spoon Fresh Flat Leaf Parsley

2 Table Spoons Fresh Basil Leaves

20 g Parmesan cheese

Makes: 20 mini balls & 1 small dip bowl of tomato sauce (enough for 20 mozzarella balls)

Time: 15 minutes + freezing (15-20 minutes) + frying (max 5 minutes – once the oil heats up, the balls will take only a minute or two to get nice brown colour

STEP 2: Method:

Drain and pat dry the mozzarella balls.

Place flour in one bowl, breadcrumbs mixed with marjoram (or oregano) in second one. Using a fork beat the egg in a small bowl (you can add about a table spoon of milk to be sure you have enough for 20 balls).

Place a mozzarella ball in the flour and coat evenly. Shake off the excess flour. Now dip it into the beaten egg again making sure it is covered evenly. Take out the ball using a fork and place it in the breadcrumb mix. Cover well. To make sure the mozzarella cheese won’t leak out when frying, cover again in egg and in breadcrumbs. Transfer onto a plate.

Put all mozzarella balls into the freezer for 15-20 minutes.

Meanwhile:

Prepare the sauce by placing all the ingredients in a small sauce pan (except for the basil, parsley leaves & Parmesan cheese). Bring to the boil, reduce the heat and simmer for about 10 minutes. Add some water if too thick. Add finely chopped herbs and finely grated Parmesan cheese. Mix well. Simmer for a further minute. Remove from the heat & let it cool a bit.

Now heat up a saucepan filled with oil. Take the mozzarella balls from the freezer and once the oil is hot enough slowly drop them in. Be careful as it will take only a minute or two for them to get nice golden colour!

Transfer on a kitchen paper towel to get rid of the excess oil.

Serve with homemade tomato sauce as a party snack or appetizer.

I have done similar to this, But yours it looks really delicious

These look SO yummy!! I am making these for supper tonight. I'll post a picture. Thanks for posting!!!!!

what can I substitute for the egg? Daughter is allergic to eggs.

There are few options. Just the info i got from internet:

Banana
Use 1/4 cup mashed banana (from about half a banana) instead of one egg when baking. Note that this may impart a mild banana flavor to whatever you are cooking, which could be a good thing.

Flax seeds
Believe it or not, hearty-healthy flax seeds can be used as an egg substitute! Simply mix one tablespoon of ground flax seeds with 3 tablespoons water until fully absorbed and viscous. Use in place of one egg. (You can use pre-ground flax seeds or grind them yourself in a spice or coffee grinder.)

These substitutions are meant for baking only, not frying. The egg in this recipe is used as a bonding agent to keep the breading attached. These suggestions would not work at all. For this recipe, I would suggest using either milk or clarified butter in place of the egg. The butter will most likely impart a buttery flavor to the finished dish (which could enhance this) while the milk is neutral in flavor and would actually complement the mozzarella. My mom always used buttermilk instead of egg for her fried chicken and it came out crispy and delicious every time. So I would suggest that as a good substitute for egg in this instance.

Chia seeds make a good sub. Same process as the flax seeds.

Mmm, tasty, I will this recipe in my mind for the next big celebration.

Thanks for the comment. It is tasty party food.

Thank you very much. They really taste divine especially with tomato sauce.
