Intro: Fried Pies

Fried Pies are delicious. Just delicious. They're a pocket sized version of the best desert in the world, second only to turkish delight.

Backstory: (Yes, there is always a backstory to my ibles) My Aunt Mabel (not really my aunt, but that's what everyone calls her) (95 and still kickin' baby), makes a load of these for family reunions, and everyone loves them. But, I wasn't able to contact Mabel, so I relied on my Step-Grandma, Bernice, who is just as good at making fried pies as the next person. So, I got her recipe, followed her instructions, and produced a result. BTW, all props for this Instructable go to her. Thank you Bernice.

This will make about six pies.

STEP 1: Making the Filling.

The filling is regular apple pie filling. Like all other pies, you can use just about whatever filling hits your fancy. Cherries, peaches, pears, etc. Heck, you might even want to try a veggie pie. Whatever you want. This is a classic apple filling. I used golden apples, from Washington!

First: Stick all your filling ingredients into a pot.

Second: Turn your burner on medium high.

Third: Cook until the apples are soft. Make sure to keep stirring, that way it doesn't burn.

You have to cook the filling now, otherwise it will not cook when you fry it.

Set it aside while you make your crust, so it cools.

STEP 2: Ingredients and Other Technical Gadgetry, Like Pans.

We need two sets of ingredients, one for the filling, and one for the crust:

Filling - 3 cups of sliced apples (I used two golden apples)
2/3 cup of sugar
1 tablespoon flour
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon or nutmeg (your choice)
2 tablespoons of whole milk
2 tablespoons of butter

Crust - 3/4 cup of Crisco
2 cups sifted flour
2 teaspoons of sugar
1/2 teaspoon of salt
1/3 cup of icewater

You'll also need oil and a pan for frying, and two spatulas (for flipping)

STEP 3: Making the Shell (pie Crust).

Typical Pie Crust:

Cut your shortening (Crisco - BTW, not very tasty, don't stick a finger full in your mouth, I would rather eat glue) into your flour mixed with salt and sugar. Add ice water to form into a dough.

Roll your dough into about six circles, about eight to ten (or twelve) inches long. Make sure to flour your surface.

STEP 4: Mating Filling With Crust.

Evenly devide your filling between your circles. Put it in the middle.

Fold your crust over, crimping the edges, so they look like the pies in the picture. They're ready to fry.

STEP 5: Make Them Burn.

Put your pan and oil (estimate on the oil, about a half an inch) on a burner on medium high. Let it heat up before you put your pies in, or you'll get soggy, oily pies.

Once hot, gently place your pies into the oil. Flip when they are golden brown. When they are done, place them on a plate covered in plenty of paper towels, and dab the tops off with more paper towel, to remove excess oil.

STEP 6: Eat.

Your pies are done! Let them sit for a while, and make sure they cool before eating. If you want to make a ton for later, you could freeze them if you wanted, and then put them into the fridge to defrost when you wanted some. Go ahead, nuke it.

could you please post the ingridients for the filling?
It's more of a "use your favorite pie filling".
Iam going to try this! Thanks!
Your claim that Turkish delight is delicious makes me wonder if there are other errors on this instructable. Joking, looks great.
How can you not like turkish delight?! It is absolutely the best thing on earth!
I have never been so disappointed as the first time i tasted Turkish delight. I would not have betrayed my family for a mouthful of that... stuff. ... thought I wasn't living in wartime England with a scarce sugar supply. Hope you're well.
Thank you, don't forget to vote!
What the hell? That looks good. +5/5 stars.
Also 5 star rating!
Mmmm! That looks real good! I could just take one out of the photo and eat it!!!
I make something very similar. When they cool I make an icing for them: Confectioners sugar (enough for all your pies start off with about 4-5 tablespoonsful and just enough water to make a thick oozy liquid) You can add a flavor like a little grated lemon zest. Put the mess in a zip lock bag and seal Cut off a litt bit of the bottom corner of the bag to make a pipette Drizzle the goodness on the turnovers and let set. Enjoy
This looks like a great recipe and I can't wait to try it. Looks like my grandmother's pies!
wow that looks good! mmm fried pies. They look a little bit like a pot sticker
