The zipper broke on this cute baby bunting and I didn't have the heart to throw it away. It's been sitting in a pile of misfit clothes for years. I decided it's time to reduce that pile and the first thing that came to mind was making a dog sweater. When I found the bunting in the pile I knew it's destiny. I attempted to put my dog Mia's arms through the arm holes but alas, too small. Than I tried it on my dog Onibaba. It fit. And straight to the drawing board I went. This Project was finished within a couple of hours.

Step 1: Supplies

1 Baby Bunting (mine is size 9 months and it fit my 16 pound miniature dachshund perfectly.)
1 scissors
2-3 Buttons
Thread
A small amount of Yarn or another thicker string
Serger or Sewing machine

Step 2: Cut

First cut off the majority of the sleeves. You could cut them completely off if you want but I liked leaving a bit. Then cut off the legs. Laying it flat on the ground and cutting straight across. The perfect length for my long dog was just above the seem of the legs. If you don't have a dachshund you'll probably have to go higher then that. Put the bunting on the dog and see where is best for your pup. Then cut off the zipper teeth.

Step 3: Sew!

There are many ways you could go about this. I went with a serger. I surged all the raw edges that I just cut. You could also sew this by either folding it over or adding some binding. I bet you could even sew it by hand. I'd recommend a thicker string and a blanket stitch if you went that route.

Step 4: Add Buttons

This bunting came with one button on it. I added two more to make it secure. The middle button I sewed quite a bit over to the side for a snugger fit. Then use yarn to make loops to fasten the buttons.

And your done!
