Frozen Coconut Oil Treats

Coconut oil is extremely healthy supplement to add to your cat or dogs' daily diet. It can help improve bad breath, teeth, fur balls, ear and eye health, digestion. Coconut oil is also known for improving dry skin and aid in promoting a healthy shiny coat. Coconut oil can also be used as a topical, but for this Instructable, we are focusing on the benefits of feeding it to your cat or dog.

In the warmer months coconut oil can become melty and annoying to deal with. Pouring it into molds and keeping it frozen provides your pet with a tasty and refreshing treat that is also good for them.

These treats require no cooking and no special tools beyond the molds and because coconut oil solidifies quickly, you can make a lot of them in a short amount of time.

Step 1: Ingredients

Coconut oil

Peanut butter (for dogs)

Blueberries (or other pet friendly fruits and veggies like bananas, squash, carrots, etc.)

Silicone or plastic molds

Wax paper or mini cupcake wrappers

Freezer

Step 2: Fruit & Coconut Oil

Put a blueberry or other favored fruit into each of the molds and then cover with coconut oil. Place in freezer until it hardens. When the treat is frozen, pop it out of the mold and store wrapped in wax paper in an air tight container in the freezer.

Cats and dogs alike enjoy this tasty frozen treat!

Smaller drops for cats seem to work better as they are more likely to sit and lick the coconut oil instead of chewing as dogs do. But it is a good bonding activity, letting your cat lick the treat from your hand.

Step 3: PB & Coconut

For peanut butter loving dogs (which ours isn't) mix equal parts unsalted, unrefined peanut butter and coconut oil together and then pour into your mold. Freeze.

Step 4: Enjoy!

It's recommended to feed your pets 1tsp of coconut oil for every 10lbs of animal. But if you're just starting out adding coconut oil to your pets' diet, start with a smaller amount and gradually increase the amount of coconut oil you are giving your cat or dog.
