Introduction: Fruit-shaped Bracelet

Have worn out pants or jeans with the rubber band still intact? You might want to keep them and make a fruit bracelet!

Hello everyone, I am a student from Singapore and I always wondered what I could do with those rubber bands from jeans and pants so I removed it and thought a bracelet would be nice as I really like wearing accessories.

Supplies

Materials

  • Rubber band (from worn out pants)
  • Scissors/Pen Knife

Step 1: Brainstorming on Ideas

I had ideas of making little shapes and attaching them to the rubber band to make it more aesthetically pleasing. However, my idea started to drift towards making a fruit-shaped bracelet, specifically pineapple as Singaporeans always have pineapple tarts for Chinese New Year and we believe pineapple brings luck to us.

I was thinking of cutting out pineapple shapes and sticking them onto the rubber but I thought of limiting to one material to see what I could produce.

That was how I came about with this design.

Step 2: Cutting the Rubber Band

I started off by measuring the circumference of my wrist (15 cm). I then added a buffer of 2-5 cm as I like my bracelet loose and a 6 cm leeway (with reference to the circumference. You might want to leave a longer leeway) to make a knot and the pineapple crown. Then, I cut the excess parts of the rubber band away.

After, I create splits at the ends of the rubber band ensuring the split is about 6 cm long.

Step 3: Forming the Bracelet

This might take a while as I presume it may be confusing…

I took the opposite split ends (the highlighted ones in the image below) and tied an overhand knot twice

This is how the top looks like after the double overhand knot

As there are two more split ends, I took one of the split ends (highlighted in yellow) and put it above the knot (circled in red)

Then I took the other split end at the bottom (highlighted in blue) to tie the last overhand knot

Step 4: Touch Ups

It was at this stage when I realised the shape of the bracelet looked more like a strawberry than a pineapple but I was alright with it as I love to eat strawberries.

I felt that the split ends were quite long which does not make it resemble a strawberry. Hence, I trimmed the split ends to make it shorter and we are done with the bracelet!
